Info for Vivaldi: Stabat Mater
"Vivaldi's Stabat Mater is an absolutely iconic masterpiece that I dreamed of performing together with an orchestra someday, even as a freshman," Jakub Józef Orliński reveals. The world-famous Polish countertenor has now turned this wish into reality with his new album. And he went one step further: the audio recording of the work is complemented by a visually stunning, almost twenty-minute music video as an unconventional visual approach to Antonio Vivaldi's famous sacred composition.
Virtuoso arias lend Vivaldi's Stabat Mater operatic features. The underlying text visualises Mary's mourning on the cross of Jesus and relates it to the (co-)suffering of the individual. The Venetian composer rigorously shortened the verses, which have been set to music many times, and alternates in his musical depiction between meditative, observant description and stirring, direct sympathy. And so the poignant work is one of Vivaldi's most frequently performed sacred works, especially, of course, at Passion time.
At Lockdown in Poland, the moment had come for Jakub Józef Orliński to depict this showpiece for countertenors in - as he emphasises - "my interpretation and to share what I see and feel in Vivaldi's music and the given text". For the instrumental part, he enlisted the Capella Cracoviensis under Jan Tomasz Adamus, while the award-winning production company Dobro Films worked with the singer to realise a dreamlike visualisation of the work.
