Info for In Her Footsteps
In the 19th century, Viennese world traveler Ida Pfeiffer circumnavigated the globe twice on her own—at a time when women were hardly allowed to leave their homes, let alone their home countries. Inspired by her captivating travelogues, jazz pianist Martin Listabarth and his trio embark on a musical journey through her life. In sensitive, powerful, and sometimes tongue-in-cheek compositions, Listabarth tells of early dreams, forbidden love, caravans through the desert, encounters with foreign cultures – and an insatiable inner urge to discover the world. But it's about more than historical anecdotes: Ida Pfeiffer's life touches on universal themes such as new beginnings, curiosity, disappointment, courage, and overcoming boundaries.
Martin Listabarth turns Ida Pfeiffer's life into a soundtrack for the here and now. The music combines poetic storytelling with the energy of improvisation—sometimes delicate, sometimes wild, always atmospheric. An album full of wanderlust, emotion, and the joy of discovery.

Martin Listabarth
is an excellent musical storyteller whose music begins precisely where words are no longer enough. His music is deeply rooted in jazz, but also moves between classical and pop—all garnished with a touch of oriental esprit. He draws inspiration for his compositions from landscapes and cities, people and personal encounters. This is reflected in highly emotional music – sometimes melancholic, sometimes suspenseful, and then again humorous, peppered with harmonic and rhythmic refinements reminiscent of “Stefano Bollani's lively, cantabile lines” (Wiener Zeitung). Listabarth creates magnificent soundscapes with keys and pedals instead of brushes and is excellent at getting the audience in the mood for the pieces with his announcements.
His two solo albums, “Short Stories” (2019) and “Dedicated” (2022), as well as his two trio albums, ‘Postcards’ (2023) and “Live in Vienna” (2025, recorded at the Vienna jazz club Porgy & Bess), have not only impressed the national media (ORF, Ö1, Die Presse, Der Standard), but have also attracted international attention: British Pianist Magazine describes him as “one to watch,” BR-Klassik described him as “a musician who is highly recognizable both as a pianist and as a composer,” and he received a nomination for the German Record Critics' Award.
Viennese pianist Martin Listabarth is now at home at jazz festivals and concerts around the world—his tours have taken him from Cairo to New York. He was nominated for the Austrian Jazz Award 2025 in the Best Newcomer category.
