Info for Bach Transcriptions

"Johann Sebastian Bach used the recorder in two Brandenburg concertos and some twenty cantatas and oratorios, but alas, he left us no sonata with harpsichord," say Julien Martin and Olivier Fortin. Arranging chamber music for a variety of instrumental ensembles was a widespread practice in the eighteenth century. Bach himself seems to have created a number of works that did not necessarily require the use of a specific instrument. Here Julien Martin and Olivier Fortin, musical partners for many years, present the Sonata in F major, originally written for transverse flute and continuo, transcriptions of the Trio Sonata for organ No. 3 in E minor , the Partita for violin No. 2 in G minor, and the Chorale 'Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland', whose extensive ornamental flourishes elongate and transform the chorale melody to the point of rendering it unrecognisable.

Julien Martin, recorder
Olivier Fortin, harpsichord

Julien Martin
studied recorder all over Europe, at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Lyon, the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, and with Pedro Memelsdorff in Milan. Since 2000, he has toured Europe and North America and recorded many albums with the Capriccio Stravagante Renaissance Orchestra. In 2010, he founded the Ensemble Resonances with Marine Sablonnière. Martin regularly collaborates with baroque dancer Hubert Hazebroucq, with whom he has created a dance piece La flûte d’Arlequin (2018). He also performs regularly with Pygmalion and Raphaël Pichon.

In addition to his more regular collaborations, he has performed with many other prominent names and groups in Europe. Martin teaches recorder and early music at the Conservatory of Music in Levallois-Perret, near Paris. His collaboration with TSC started in 2019, when Third Practice first premiered with the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra.

Olivier Fortin
graduated with distinction from the Québec Conservatory in 1995. He continued his training with Dom André Laberge, obtained a Master Degree from University of Montreal under the direction of Réjean Poirier, and received several scholarships for studies in Paris with Pierre Hantai and in Amsterdam with Bob van Asperen.

In 1997 he was awarded top prizes at the Montreal Bach Competition and the Bruges Festival. Olivier Fortin is in demand as a soloist and chamber musician, touring and recording throughout Europe, China and South Korea, the United States and Canada with Masques, Capriccio Stravagante and Tafelmusik.

He also performs with Skip Sempé and Pierre Hantaï in programs of music for two and three harpsichords. From 2004-08 he taught harpsichord and chamber music at the Conservatoire de Musique de Québec, and he currently teaches at the Tafelmusik Summer Institute in Toronto.
