Info for Telemann: Chamber Music with Recorder

Georg Philipp Telemann: a Love Affair for Life: The recorder was one of the instruments Georg Philipp Telemann played himself. In my opinion, he is the baroque composer who wrote the most idiomatically for the instrument. That pleasure is enhanced by the fact that his work always takes me back to my youth. Aside from the recorder, I also used to play the oboe and my younger brother played both the recorder and the bassoon. I well remember the many hours of happy music making and working towards performances at the music school. It is that uncomplicated joy of playing together which is characteristic of Telemann’s works and which I and my friends have tried to capture in this recording. The recording sessions took place in my beloved Kruiskerk in Burgum, where I have been playing since I was ten; a ‘sentimental journey’ you might say. In an effort to become a child again, as it were, and to relive the uninhibitedness of youth, I once again hope to communicate to the listener how amazing this ancient music is. This recording includes all kinds of chamber music, from more intimate trio sonatas with various wind instruments to two grandly conceived concertos for seven instruments.

Four of the six trio sonatas for recorder and oboe are in a minor key, presumably not a coincidence: these keys are particularly appropriate to the oboe’s melancholy tone, with its spun out, soul-stirring lines. In Telemann’s day, the oboe was often typecast in this way, think of the famous examples from Bach’s works such as the sinfonias from the Easter Oratorio BWV 249 and the cantatas BWV 12 and 21.

The genre of the trio sonata was already known as one of Telemann’s specialities during his lifetime. To understand why, it will suffice to listen to the first movement of the Trio Sonata in C minor (TWV 42:c7). After the oboe has led off with a serious theme, the recorder immediately comes alongside, seemingly independent, like someone with an entirely different mindset passing by coincidentally. Not until six measures later do the recorder and the oboe start a conversation, as if they were two personalities. Telemann – who else could come up with something like that?

The frequent return to the note A in the first movement of the Trio Sonata in A minor (TWV 42:a6) reinforces the expression of sadness, which is then enhanced by a falling chromatic line. In the opening movement of the Trio Sonata in E minor (TWV 42:e6) the first measure after the opening chord in the principal key immediately suggests G major. It is this unpredictability that makes Telemann such a brilliant composer; a master of artistic misdirection, like Haydn after him. ...

Ensemble Cordevento
Trio Sonatas with Oboe:
Rodrigo López Paz, oboe
Heidi Peltoniemi, violoncello
Marije van der Ende, bassoon
Alessandro Pianu, harpsichord

Ensemble Cordevento
Founded in 2006, is an ensemble with a flexible line-up. The group works as a trio with recorder, baroque guitar and harpsichord as well as a small baroque orchestra with strings and winds. Cordevento plays on copies of historical instruments, the guitar for instance is a copy of a Stradivarius. In 2007 the ensemble was asked to perform the opening concert at the prestigious Tage der Alte Musik in Berlin. In addition Cordevento is a regular guest on the early music festivals in Utrecht, Modena, Moscow, Saint-Petersburg and Sofia. The past season the ensemble toured extensively through The Netherlands and Belgium within the early music network. The ensemble is under contract with Brilliant Classics and will release its debut CD in September; the recorder concertos by Vivaldi. The individual members have already released many CD's with the works of Giuliani, Handel, Telemann and Van Eyck.

Erik Bosgraaf
is generally considered to be one of the world’s most virtuosic recorder players, and certainly the most adventurous. Moreover, he is an inspiring conductor. To Erik, his instrument is an inexhaustible source of inspiration, with endless possibilities. He improvises, plays jazz, utilizes electronics and likes working with people in other areas of artistic endeavour such as cinematography. His repertoire extends from medieval music to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons to tomorrow’s music. For Erik there is no fundamental difference between historical and contemporary repertoire. He is of the opinion that ‘early music is always new’. As a soloist he is regularly invited to lead the orchestra himself. If not playing the recorder, he leads from the harpsichord or – in classical and later repertoire for chamber orchestra – conducts from the front.
