Grieg’s music was written for Henrik Ibsen’s play, which tells the story of the Norwegian farmer Peer Gynt, who experiences all sorts of adventures. It is a cruel story in which the egocentric Peer leaves a trail of destruction and heartbreak in his wake. The music that accompanied the premiere in 1876 was a resounding success, while Ibsen’s play was only moderately received. The composer eventually adapted the incidental music into two orchestral suites that can be performed in concert halls without a stage production. He later also arranged these suites for piano four hands – the version that is played by Lucas and Arthur Jussen.
