Info for Glutton For Punishment (The Poetry Edition)

Heartworms releases her highly anticipated debut album Glutton For Punishment on Speedy Wunderground. The album is produced by longtime collaborator Dan Carey.

Glutton For Punishment combines the propulsive, motorik tendencies of gothic stalwarts Depeche Mode with the lyrical dexterity of PJ Harvey and the off-kilter rhythms of LCD Soundsystem. The result is a powerful sonic onslaught that is entirely Heartworms.

Recorded with longtime collaborator Dan Carey, ‘The Poetry Edition’ incorporates reimagined versions, remixes, and the spoken word piece ‘Beat Poem’, first developed during Orme’s live shows. “Long before we went into the studio to record this album, I handmade Dan Carey a poetry book containing the lyrics,” Heartworms comments. “These stripped back versions are a homage to those early stages of creation. ‘Beat Poem’ became potent in my live performances, bringing it back into Dan’s studio transformed it into something that doesn’t just ask you to listen, but grabs you by the collar and screams.”

“Long before we went into the studio to record this album, I handmade Dan Carey a poetry book containing the lyrics to the songs. I wanted him to have an idea of where the album would take us. These stripped back versions on the Poetry Edition are an homage to those early stages of creation. ‘Beat Poem’ was something that was born from and became potent in my live performances on the album tour. Bringing the idea back into Dan’s studio, I knew he would help me transform it into more than words being read over a beat. It doesn’t just ask you to listen now – it grabs you by the collar and screams.” (Heartworms)

Heartworms

Jojo Orme (Heartworms)
Jojo’s debut album, Glutton For Punishment, reveals her as a talented stylist and cutting lyricist, the 26-year-old musician deftly weaving stories about her childhood and her fractured relationship with her mother with the images of war and human suffering that have captivated and shocked her since she was young. Produced by Dan Carey (Wet Leg, Fontaines DC) and released on his Speedy Wunderground label, Glutton For Punishment taps into a lineage of gothic pop songwriting and production that includes PJ Harvey, Anna Calvi and Zola Jesus, while retaining Orme’s own skewiff, idiosyncratic sensibility. All album singles were added to the BBC Radio 6 Music playlist following support from Chris Hawkins, Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne, and Tom Ravenscroft at the station. The singles also grabbed spot plays from Radio X’s John Kennedy, BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders and Gemma Bradley, and Apple Music 1’s Matt Wilkinson. Backed by a full live band, Heartworms’ performances are a masterclass in poise; she describes the theatre brought to each show, usually punctuated by her intense stare, as a kick back against preconceived notions of ‘smallness’ and fragility as a female musician. On stage, Heartworms’ projection is the very antithesis: we see an artist who is big, powerful, and in total control.
