Info for Venus Rising

How can the works of women composers be brought to life? Bring them out of oblivion, and then what? This is the question posed by the Trio SR9 in ‘Venus Rising’.

Their answer is provided by Canadian singer Kyrie Kristmanson. Interweaving their singular musical worlds, they bring together and assemble works by Rebecca Clarke, Pauline Viardot and Hildegard von Bingen, as well as Harriett Abrahms, Germaine Tailleferre and Kate Bush.

Arranged specially for this disc, they engage in a dialogue with each other through four compositions by Kyrie Kristmanson, creating a narrative that traverses the themes of love, contemplation and desire with unparalleled freedom.

Trio Sr9
t has been almost 10 years that the Trio SR9, founded by Paul Changarnier, Nicolas Cousin and Alexandre Esperet in Lyon, has been sharing its passion with audiences around the world. Having achieved their studies at the CNSMD de Lyon with Jean Geoffroy et Henri-Charles Caget, the three percussionists and friends decided to embark on this human and musical adventure.

The Trio was awarded the 1st Prize of the « Percussion Trio 2012 » organised by the International Percussion Competition Luxembourg (and also the public prize, and the « lalux » prize for the best interpretation). In 2012 the Trio won the European Music Ensemble Competition organised by FNAPEC, and received the fellowship of the Banque Populaire Foundation in 2016. The Trio has since then become recognised and widely acclaimed on the musical scene.

Strengthened by these experiences, the Trio SR9 initiated several new projects which all express an open attitude towards a wide range of aesthetics. Spanning various repertoires, the ensemble renews the interpretation of works from our musical heritage for three marimbas (Bach, Mendelssohn, Stravinsky, Ravel, etc.) and collaborates with composers (François Tashdjian, Florent Caron-Darras, Balint Karosi, Daniel Arango-Prada) on the creation of new pieces.

Kyrie Kristmanson
Whether she's performing solo with her guitar and trumpet or with string quartet , Kyrie Kristmanson never ceases to surprise with her musical vision somewhere in between ecstatic ritual and pop song. Her elemental songs embody the raw beauty of the Canadian landscapes where she grew up.

Kyrie's 2010 album Origin of Stars brought her out of her native Canada and introduced her to the rest of the world. She relocated to Paris for the European tour and continued her research into the songwriters of medieval France who she cites as her musical ancestors. In March 2011, Kyrie released her Thundersongs EP in North America, whose songs explore the tension between sacred and profane yearning as sung by the men and women troubadours.
