Info for Johann Joachim Quantz - Flute Sonatas & Adagio

The album ‘Flute Sonatas & Adagio’, which flutist Anna Reichhold recorded together with Agnieszka Skorupa on the harpsichord, invites you on a special musical journey into the Baroque era. The album features works by Johann Joachim Quantz (1697-1773), who is not only regarded as one of the most important flute virtuosos of his time, but also made a name for himself as a court composer and flute teacher to Frederick the Great.

The works are presented authentically on replicas of historical instruments and in high-resolution audio quality. Johann Joachim Quantz (1697-1773) is not only regarded as one of the most important flute virtuosos of his time, but also made a name for himself as court composer and flute teacher to Frederick the Great. His extensive oeuvre includes around 200 sonatas, 300 concertos and dozens of chamber music works.

The Hamburg-born flautist Anna Reichhold and Agnieszka Skorupa on the harpsichord bring some of these to life on their album ‘Flute Sonatas & Adagio’ - in a refreshing interpretation that also comes surprisingly close to the historical performance practice of the Baroque period at the court of Frederick the Great. For the recordings, Anna Reichhold used a faithful reproduction of a transverse flute developed by Quantz, employing authentic baroque playing techniques such as articulation and ornamentation.

Translated with www.DeepIn addition, both musicians used the manuscripts of the copyist manuscripts owned by Frederick II, which are in the special collection of the music department of the Staatsbibliothek-Preußischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin. This brings the performance of the compositions fascinatingly close to the ‘Empfindsamer Stil’, which enjoyed great popularity at the time. The fact that the listener feels acoustically transported back to a concert at the Potsdamer Hof is also due to the special recording process used to produce the album: This is because the Ultra Authentic Audio Recording developed by friends of green sonic was used. Its centrepiece is the award-winning clàr audio recorder, which offers the highest sound resolution in the world. In combination with the mac-talla artificial head, an amazingly natural 3D sound impression is created - as if you were there live.

Anna Reichhold
studied the modern flute under Annette von Stackelberg on the Orchestral Instruments degree programme for flute at Berlin University of the Arts. She attended master classes with András Adorján and master classes in early music with Laurence Déan and Christoph Huntgeburth. A few years ago, she specialised in historical performance practice and expanded her knowledge of the baroque flute with renowned artists: her teacher is Benedek Csalog and she completed master classes with Marc Hantaï at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and with Barthold Kuijken.

As a freelance artist and passionate music teacher for modern flute and historical baroque flutes, Anna Reichhold has been teaching students from all over the world, giving concerts and working with various chamber music ensembles for 23 years. 18th century Baroque music is her great passion, which she loves to share and pass on.

Agnieszka Skorupa
plays the fortepiano, harpsichord, clavichord and piano. Currently, she works as an accompanist at the University of the Arts Berlin and the Music Academy in Poznań, having previously held positions at the Music Academy in Katowice and the Academy of Arts in Szczecin.

She has performed with numerous distinguished ensembles, such as the New Century Chamber Orchestra with Daniel Hope, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester at the Berlin Philharmonie, and the Philharmonic Orchestra in Poznań. She has also performed at prestigious festivals, including the Stagioni Festival in Montecastelli Pisano (alongside Giovanni Antonini and Dmitry Smirnov), the Göttingen International Handel Festival, and the Utrecht Early Music Festival.

Agnieszka Skorupa is the recipient of numerous awards from international competitions and music festivals. Her artistic achievements have been recognized with an award from the Polish Minister of Culture and National Heritage, as well as two scholarships from the Polish Minister of Science and Higher Education. She has also received support from the Paul Hindemith Society in Berlin and is currently a scholar with the Förderverein Pianomuseum e.V., where she has been provided with a clavichord from the Dohr collection as part of two consecutive one-year scholarships (2023/2024 and 2024/2025).

She studied at the University of the Arts Berlin with Avinoam Shalev and Lucas Blondeel, as well as at the music academies in Poznań with Alicja Kledzik and in Katowice with Katarzyna Drogosz.
