Lola Casariego
This exceptional singer, born in Oviedo, Spain, has enjoyed a long and fruitful career as a mezzo-soprano. Recently, under the expert tutelage of her teacher Daniel Muñoz and abetted by her successful appearances as Salud in “La vida breve” by de Falla, she has explored the extremes of her vocal range and re-invented herself as a lirico-spinto soprano.
As a mezzo-soprano, Ms. Casariego appeared in such internationally acclaimed venues as the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, the Festival Settembre Musica of Torino, the Teatro Verdi in Trieste, the Teatro Real in Madrid, Pittsburgh Opera, the Grand Théâtre du Genève, Opéra de Marseille, the New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv, Opéra de Massy (Paris), the theaters of Tours, Reims, Nice, Monte Carlo and the Salle Pleyel in Paris, the Smétana Hall in Prague, the Arsenal de Metz, the Tívoli in Cophenhagen, the theaters in Weimar and Leipzig, and the Konzerthauses of Vienna and Berlin. Her roles in those theaters included Rosina, Dorabella, Adalgisa, Cenerentola, Idamante, Siebel, Sesto, Ottavia, the Marchesa Melibea (Il viaggio a Reims), Carmen, Charlotte, Isabella (L’italiana in Algeri) and Preziosilla (La forza del destino).
Since she re-emerged as a soprano, Ms. Casariego has debuted as Salud at Lincoln Center in New York, with the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, and later repeated the role at the Fredric R. Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv with the philharmonic orchestra of Israel, at the award ceremony of the Premios Príncipe de Asturias in Oviedo, with the ORTVE at the Teatro Monumental (a production that was broadcast live by Radiotelevisión Española) and, most recently, in the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid as part of the production of “Ay Amor!” by de Falla/Wernicke to critical acclaim (“The Salud of Lola Casariego is flawless from beginning to end, specially from her aria “Vivan los que ríen” in which she emerges as a true “state animal”, making every fiber of the character her own”- zarzuela.net)
In addition, she has been seen in the role of the Duquesa de Medina in “Jugar con fuego” by F.A. Barbieri at the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid with the Opus24 Orchestra, as the soprano soloist in “L’enfance du Christ” by Berlioz with ORCAM, and as Mimì in “La Bohème” at the Teatro Arenal in Madrid. She appeared in a variety of concerts of scenes from famous operas, including as Elisabetta in “Don Carlo,” as Leonora in “La forza del destino,” and in the title role of “Tosca.”
Her upcoming performances include her debuts as Leonora (Il trovatore) and in the title roles of Aida and Tosca. She will also make her first appearance at the Teatro del Liceo in Barcelona at the end of 2013, as a soloist in concerts honoring Giuseppe Verdi.
Lola Casariego has recorded for, among others, EMI Classics, Audivis-Valois, Harmonia Mundi and Non Profit Music, performing principal roles in works such as “El barbarillo de Lavapiés” by F.A. Barbieri, the “Goyescas” of E. Granados, “El hijo fingido” by J. Rodrigo, great works of the Baroque era such as “Acis y Galatea, “Los elementos” and “Júpiter y Sémele” by A. de Literes, “Colpa, pentimento e Grazia” by A. Scarlatti, and an album of songs by Spanish composers, “Three portraits with shadow,” with the OEX. In addition, she can be seen on a variety of videos released by the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, including “Agua, azucarillos y aguardiente,” “El bateo,” and “Los diamantes de la corona” by F.A. Barbieri.
