Nightclubbing, Grace Jones’ fifth studio album, was released in May 1981 and with its nine tracks including club and chart smash 'Pull Up To The Bumper', it was an immediate hit, with positive reviews on both sides of the Atlantic.
The iconic sleeve for Nightclubbing became one of popular music’s most striking and was painted from a photograph taken by Jean Paul Goude. Pop had been used to men looking like women for a decade, but was less used to seeing women dressing like men.
The body of work that Grace Jones made her own at Island Records in the early 80s is among the most startling in popular music. Beginning with Warm Leatherette and concluding with Living My Life, the three albums Jones recorded between 1980 and 1982 at Compass Point Studios in Nassau in the Bahamas and produced by Alex Sadkin and Chris Blackwell became benchmarks. Nestling in the middle of these records, the very best of the very best, is Nightclubbing, the album on which her musical legacy rests.
Nightclubbing remains the high water mark of Grace Jones’ time at Compass Point, the album on which her musical legacy rests, a sophisticated mêlée of sound, astute A&R’ing, a perfect example of artist and musicians working in complete accord. And here it is again. It is simply one of the irresistible highlights of the early 80s.
The album reached number #35 on the UK Album Chart in May 1981, #9 on Billboard’s R&B Albums chart and #32 on Pop Albums, and this in combination with an entirely new androgynous image created by Jean-Paul Goude brought Jones from being a former disco diva with a loyal cult following but dropping sales figures to an international star with mainstream chart success, and resulted in Island Records re-releasing her 1980 album Warm Leatherette worldwide. It was also voted best album of 1981 by NME critics at the time – and in Oct 2013 it came in at 212 on the best 250 albums of all time.

Born in Jamaica in 1948, Grace Jones became an icon of modern music with a pioneering electronic pop sound and an inimitable style. The singer and actress started out as a model, regularly appearing at the New York City nightclub Studio 54, before securing a record deal with Island Records in 1977, which resulted in a string of dance-club hits.
In the late 1970s, she adapted the emerging electronic music style and adopted a severe, androgynous look. Many of her singles were hits on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play and Hot Dance Airplay charts and Jones was also able to find mainstream success in Europe, particularly the United Kingdom. Her most notable albums are Warm Leatherette, Nightclubbing and Slave to the Rhythm, with big hits including “Pull Up to the Bumper”, “I’ve Seen That Face Before (Libertango)”, “Private Life”, “Slave to the Rhythm” and “I’m Not Perfect (But I’m Perfect for You)”.
An icon of modern music, Jones has since also acted and featured in a series of fashion and photography projects, not least for The Vinyl Factory in collaboration with groundbreaking light artist Chris Levine.
While she enjoyed her greatest success in the late 70′s and 80’s, Jones continues to write and perform, collaborating with artists and musicians, and is recognized as one of the most important and influential figures in the history of pop music.
