Info for Franz Schubert: Willkommen und Abschied

Placed under the aegis of Goethe's poem Willkommen und Abschied (Greeting and parting), the lieder that make up this programme are emblematic of Romantic feeling as it is displayed throughout Schubert's output: the subject, a traveller in search of meaning and a feeling of oneness with nature, asks himself all his life what place he occupies in the world. To this deeply existential question, the consciousness of the roaming Wanderer can see only one answer, steeped in the atmosphere of Sturm und Drang: ‘I am a stranger everywhere.'

“It comprises 19 songs, all stylishly and beautifully sung by the tenor Werner Güra. The six Goethe settings include such familiar contrasts as Heidenröslein and Ganymed, while Willkommen und Abschied itself, more of a rarity, is heroically sung. The strength of Güra’s tone without any loss of quality has always been his strong point.” (The Sunday Telegraph)

'The excellent duo of German tenor Werner Güra and Viennese fortepianist Christoph Berner have constructed their own thoughtful cycle based around the Goethe setting 'Wilkommen und Abschied'. The life, loves and losses of a fictional Romantic are portrayed, from youth ('Schlummerlied'), through adolescent rapture ('Ganymed') to death ('Nocturne'), making gentle but never coercive psychological sense. Berner, playing an 1872 Rönisch fortepiano, shows keen attention to every detail. Güra, outstanding in his unfussy, intense delivery, is a formidable, rousing guide.' (Fiona Maddocks, The Observer)
