Info for Time in Flux …

The Amelio Trio, which won the German Music Competition in 2024 and is currently taking the world’s stages by storm, has been chosen as one of the ECHO Rising Stars of the season 2026/27. In collaboration with Deutschlandfunk, the German Music Council, and GENUIN, the young piano trio now presents a seamlessly crafted album: The trios by Charles Ives, Ludwig van Beethoven, Ursula Mamlok, and Johannes Brahms flow into one another, forming a musical bridge that spans centuries and continents. Birke Bertelsmeier’s “vertrautes angezogensein” (familiar attire), composed especially for this album, recapitulates all the previous works and brings the journey full circle – chamber music at its highest level!

Amelio Trio

Amelio Trio The trio was founded in 2012 by violinist Johanna Schubert, cellist Merle Geißler and pianist Philipp Kirchner at the suggestion of their music teachers in order to participate in the German youth competition Jugend Musiziert. At the time, they were just 13 years old. Today, having played together for over half their lives, their deep connection ist unmistakable – captivating audiences with their seamless interplay, stylistic versatility, boundless curiosity and distinctive musical energy.

Nominated by the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Philharmonie Cologne, the Barbican Centre as well as the Philharmonie du Luxembourg, the Amelio Trio has been selected as ECHO Rising Star for the 2026/27 season, leading to performances in Europe’s most renowned concert halls. The ensemble’s growing international career has been shaped by major competition successes, including the second prize at the prestigious ARD Music Competition 2023 in Munich, the Grand Prize of the German Music Competition 2024, and the first prize at the International Schumann Chamber Music Prize Frankfurt 2022. The Amelio Trio is ensemble in residence at ProQuartet – Centre Européen de Musique de Chambre in Paris 2023-25.

Concert tours have taken them throughout Germany and other European countries, with performances at renowned venues such as the Alte Oper Frankfurt, the Prinzregententheater Munich, the Beethoven-Haus Bonn, the Laeiszhalle Hamburg and festivals such as the Schwetzinger SWR Festspiele and the Piano Trio Fest Bern. In addition to classical-romantic repertoire, the Amelio Trio passionately presents contemporary music in its programs. The three musicians are constantly searching for diverse expressive possibilities for their ensemble and their very personal approach to the works.

Their debut CD „Time in Flux“ featuring works by Ives, Beethoven, Mamlok, Brahms and a commissioned piece by composer Birke Bertelsmeier, will be released in September 2025 on the GENUIN label in collaboration with Deutschlandfunk Kultur.

The ensemble members are generously supported by scholarships from the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben and the Cusanuswerk. Johanna and Merle play on fine instruments by Lorenzo Storioni (Cremona 1779) from the Deutsche Musikinstrumentenfonds and by Giuseppe Dollenz (Triest 1875) on a generous private loan.

After many years under the tutelage of Angelika Merkle, the trio has been under the artistic guidance of Oliver Wille (Kuss Quartett) and Stefan Heinemeyer (ATOS Trio) since 2019. Furthermore, they have received important artistic inputs from musicians including Eberhard Feltz, Steven Isserlis and the Fauré Quartett.
