Info for Il Violone Impertinente
The project " ll violone impertinente" aims to create a minor short circuit with this false repertoire of the Baroque double bass by returning these pieces to their original source, drawing on manuscripts or old prints and drawing on the experience of historically informed performance practice by playing them on a double bass that is a copy of an old instrument with a Baroque frame.
The pieces take on a new character that is clearly different from that of a modern double bass, particularly due to the specific sound characteristics of this type of violin: thinner, less tense gut strings, a different fingerboard, other less obvious differences in the construction of the instrument, and the use of a Baroque bow made of a different wood with a different curvature, which produces a distinctive sound. It is as if a violone player of that time, rebelling against the conventions that confined him exclusively to a supporting role, wanted to prove his ambitions as a soloist, even as a virtuoso.
As everyone knows, the art of transcription was very much alive and widespread throughout the Baroque period.
