Three composers from the first half of the 19th century, all born within less than a decade of each other, and yet their works could hardly be more different! All three are hardly or not at all present in concert life, which is why the new album by piano duo Adrienne Soós and Ivo Haag invites you on a journey of discovery.
Despite its quality, Franz Schubert's Divertissement sur des motifs originaux français D 823 is still overshadowed by his other four-hand works - very unjustly! Yet this lively sonata, with its energetic march in the first movement, the varied character variations in the second and a brilliant finale with Hungarian echoes in the third movement, does not fail to have an effect on the audience - a real discovery!
The Swiss composer Friedrich Theodor Fröhlich (1803-1836) is almost forgotten today. In his short life, he created an impressive oeuvre of remarkable originality, centred on choral music and the Lied, which in many respects echoes Schubert without the two ever having met. His three four-hand fugues op. 12 bear witness to contrapuntal mastery and irrepressible expressive will.
In contrast to Fröhlich and Schubert, Ignaz Moscheles (1794-1870) was spoilt by success and his works were still played fairly regularly until the early 20th century. Why has Moscheles been all but forgotten today? Perhaps because musical taste and the image of the Romantic artist have changed fundamentally. Moscheles did not correspond at all to the image of the genius-driven genius: he was wealthy, happily married and led an upper middle-class life - not really the stuff of a Romantic artist's novel!
The Grande Sonate symphonique op. 112 combines classical form with romantic expressiveness, surprises with imagination and inventiveness and impresses with its orchestral sound, dense polyphony and formal sophistication - a masterpiece by a virtuoso who has been unjustly forgotten.
