Info for A Better Feeling
Lotte Gallagher is a Melbourne singer-songwriter. Her punchy debut single Adam saw her named a triple j Unearthed High finalist, earn a Number One Most Played at triple j and perform a breathtaking rendition of Split Enz’s Message To My Girl at Mushroom 50 alongside Gordi. Lotte’s debut EP A Better Feeling – featuring Adam, Gray and latest single This Room – is out 4 October. With her too-cool-but-I-care-too-much attitude, Lotte’s live act is not to be missed.
Music has always been a part of Lotte Gallagher’s life. Born and raised in the inner north of Melbourne, she grew up surrounded by the sounds of artists such as Portishead, Jeff Buckley and Nirvana and attending local shows with her parents, instilling a deep love and appreciation of music.
So, it’s no surprise that at 14, Lotte turned to making music herself, learning guitar online and writing her first songs. “I've never been good at writing a diary so for me, writing songs is a way to think about things and get out how I'm feeling,” she says.
In 2023, Lotte’s anthemic debut single, ‘Adam’, saw her named a triple j Unearthed High finalist and catapulted into the spotlight. From there, it’s been all systems go: since signing with indie label Liberation Records and Mushroom Management last September, and joining Lonely Lands Agency, she’s played a steady stream of summer festivals including Laneway, NYE on the Hill and St Kilda Fest, and supported Canadian rockers The Beaches and indie sensation Ricky Montgomery on their national tours.
Now, still only 17 and in her final year of high school, Lotte releases her debut EP, A Better Feeling. It’s a confident and addictive collection, combining the effortless cool of modern indie stars such as Phoebe Bridgers and Angie McMahon with the nostalgic energy of the 90s rock Lotte was raised on. The EP’s earworm melodies are driven by propulsive, shimmering guitars, Lotte’s commanding vocals and her striking yet heartfelt lyricism.
These seven songs are tied together with colour, sound and emotion, from heartbreak and anger to moving on. The soaring ‘Gasoline’ introduces the EP with Lotte’s metaphor-rich imagery, continuing through ‘Adam’ and the jangling ‘Gray’. Acoustics are in focus on ‘Heavy’, one of Lotte’s earliest songs written about her first relationship at 14, and the gorgeous ‘Falling Through’, providing a moment of sonic respite before ‘Blue’ and ‘This Room’ bring it all home, that voice always at the fore.
Written in a time period spanning from Lotte’s early teenage years to the present, these songs represent an artistic and personal journey for a songwriter who’s still experiencing the highs and lows of young adulthood in real time. “There's definitely a theme of growing, mental health issues and learning about how to deal with relationships – just figuring it all out,” Lotte says.
Most of these songs began as lyrics jotted down on Lotte’s phone, capturing raw snapshots of her thoughts and feelings. From there, she brought them to life through her collaboration with industry veterans Oscar Dawson (Holy Holy) and Ali Barter. The duo’s combined years of experience in songwriting and production helped Lotte refine and execute her precocious artistic vision – and made it a much more communal, and joyful, process. “Writing songs is really easy with them – creatively we're very similar,” she says. “It’s so much more fun than writing on my own because I'm not coming from a place of sadness.”
The EP takes its name from a refrain in closing track ‘This Room’: “When I start leaving, I just need a better feeling.” For Lotte, the experience of writing and recording this collection – and of life itself – is summed up in those three simple words. “The whole EP is me writing, getting it out and having a better feeling afterwards,” she says. “It’s kind of optimistic – no matter what you have going on, there's a better feeling at the end.”

Lotte Gallagher
is a singer songwriter and guitarist from Northside Melbourne. The Northcote High student is a finalist in Triple J Unearthed High 2023. Lotte released her first track to the platform in 2023 receiving rave reviews.
‘Angie McMahon out front of New Order! Well, that was my initial thought. But it's clear you've got your own bold vision to go with that unmistakably confident voice’. - Richard Kingsmill.
n artistic soul with an air of blasé vengeance, Lotte’s sound is reminiscent of genre leaders Phoebe Bridgers, Angie McMahon and Courtney Barnett. A student at Northcote High, Lotte has immersed herself in art and music classes, fueling the creativity in her instrumentation and striking mature lyricism, as well as direction of her own visuals. Surrounded by music throughout her childhood, Lotte’s parents served as both inspirations and teachers while she found her passion for guitar and singing. Fully supporting her, in recent years they sold their second car to afford her studio time with a producer.
With her too-cool-but-I-care-too-much attitude, Lotte Gallagher is a force to be reckoned with – a phenomenal artist with the drive to become a true star of her generation.
