Info for Live at Montreux Jazz Festival 2022

One of Rolling Stone's Top 100 Guitarists of All Time, John McLaughlin returns in peak form with Live at Montreux Jazz Festival 2022, a stunning performance captured at one of the world's most iconic musical stages.

A trailblazer who reshaped jazz fusion through his work with Miles Davis, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Shakti, McLaughlin brings over five decades of innovation to this electrifying 90-minute set. Backed by his longtime band The 4th Dimension and featuring award-winning Cuban pianist Jany McPherson as special guest, this release is a masterclass in genre-defying musicianship.

The setlist draws from every corner of McLaughlin's expansive musical journey, including fan favorites like "New Blues Old Bruise" and "El Hombre Que Sabia" — a heartfelt tribute to friend and flamenco legend Paco De Lucia. The band also delivers inspired renditions of Pharoah Sanders' spiritual jazz epic "The Creator Has a Master Plan" and Piero Piccioni's cinematic gem "The Light at the Edge of the World."

Recorded with cutting-edge mobile technology and mixed by George Murphy (Shakti, Mumford and Sons, Ellie Goulding) at Eastcote Studios in London, Live at Montreux Jazz Festival 2022 is more than a concert — it's an immersive experience that captures the soul, skill, and spontaneity of a guitar legend hailed by Jeff Beck as "the greatest living guitarist."

John McLaughlin
Voted Jazz Guitarist of the Year several times and awarded the Frankfurt Music Prize in 2012, this marks another milestone in the history of the Wollfabrik. After his concert at the Wollfabrik in 2019, we are pleased to welcome him back to Schwetzingen. The Brit is a great jazz virtuoso of the guitar and one of the few Europeans who have been able to provide decisive impetus to the development of jazz in the USA. He rose to fame with Miles Davis's band, played with Paco de Lucia and Aldi Meola, and, as co-founder of one of the most important fusion bands of all time, "The Mahavishnu Orchestra," triggered a musical earthquake with their debut album "The Inner Mounting Flame" in 1971. Rolling Stone magazine has long listed him among the 50 and 100 greatest guitarists. He was awarded a Grammy in 2018.

His band, "The 4th Dimension," is the result of years of collaboration with various musicians from different cultures and musical traditions. The group's music uniquely integrates all these cultural influences while preserving the spontaneity of jazz.

Gary Husband
Gary Husband is a truly versatile instrumentalist who switches from keyboards to drums with astonishing ease. He has worked with many musicians—Allan Holdsworth, Jack Bruce, Jeff Beck, Mike Stern, Christian McBride, Billy Cobham, Mike and Ian Carr's bands, Yaron Herman, Bob Berg, Gary Moore, Level 42, and Robin Trower. He has formed his own bands with Randy Brecker, Jerry Goodman, Matthew Garrison, Jim Beard, among others, and has been playing with John McLaughlin for over six years.

Nicolas Viccaro
Born in 1986, the son of a professional drummer, he began playing the drums at the age of 3. He began studying his craft seriously at the Nice Conservatory at an early age, receiving the conservatory's first prize before moving to Paris.

In Paris, Nicolas came into contact with some of the best musicians on the scene and began to find his place on the international scene with prestigious collaborations ranging from jazz and pop to African and Latin American jazz music.

Among the artists with whom Nicoals has played and recorded are: Dave Stewart (EURYTHMICS), Hans Zimmer, Mike Mainieri, Mike Stern, Richard Bona, Bill Evans, Biréli Lagrene, Dhafer Youssef, Etienne Mbappé, Bob Reynolds, Scott Kinsey, Carles Benavent, Frank McComb, Véronique Sanson, Hadrien Feraud, Dominique DiPiazza, Nguyen Le, Jim Beard, Seamus Blake, Sixun, Andy Narell, Sylvain Luc, Jacky Terrasson, and others.

Etienne M'Bappe
is considered one of the world's best bassists and has been part of McLaughlin's band for four years. He has performed with Ray Charles, Salif Keita, Joe Zawinul, Manu Dibango, and Steps Ahead. Etienne played with the Parisian fusion band Ultramarine before forming his own band, Su La Take.
