Info for Fossora

Fossora is the 10th album from singular icon Björk. Its name is derived from the feminine version of the Latin word for digger, and draws from Björk’s experience being grounded during lockdown in her native Iceland. Using her characteristically eclectic musical style, Björk folds in different influences and styles on Fossora. Amidst earthy bass clarinets and tender thematic explorations into her ancestry are vigorous gabber eruptions, culminating in a sort of “biological techno”. The end result is a mixture of the fantastical and the personal - a bold artistic excursion from a distinctly individual, restless creative force.

Fossora features a song with Serpentwithfeet and backing vocals from Björk’s son, Sindri, and daughter, Ísadóra, as well as contributions from Gabber Modus Operandi, the Indonesian dance duo who brewed up a style that the duo and Björk termed “biological techno.” Describing Utopia as “a pacifist, idealistic album with flutes and synths and birds,” Björk envisaged Fossora thus: “Let’s see what it’s like when you walk into this fantasy and, you know, have a lunch and farrrrt, and do normal things, like meet your friends.”

"At times startling, floundering and epic, Fossora attempts to meld personal experience with the cosmos, to make experiences universal. Like any such grand project, it's daring and indulgent, occasionally weighed down by its own pretence, and the result is several songs on the album that seem to unspool in no direction in particular. But that unwinding is usually gripping, and like the other two albums Björk's recent renaissance—Utopia and Vulnicura—Fossora stuns more often than it doesn't." (Andrew Ryce, RA)
