Info for Claude

Carl Mayotte Releases His Fifth Album ‘Claude’. With Claude, Carl moves away from his usual 70s-inspired style to create a more contemporary musical identity.

A moving tribute to the memory of his father, whom he lost in 2024, the album explores a rich emotional spectrum where light and nostalgia intertwine.

Each composition recalls a memory shared with his father: car rides in Loretteville when he was eight years old, late-night jam sessions in the family basement, and their shared passion for Jimi Hendrix. For Carl, this album represents a form of collective mourning to be shared with the world—a way of celebrating the man his father was and the profound influence he had on his life and music.

This project also allowed the bassist to collaborate with artists from diverse musical backgrounds: Fred Fortin, a pop-folk-rock icon; Pierre Rémillard, a key figure in metal; Dayron Luis San Juan, a master of Cuban music; and Pierre-Emmanuel Beaudoin, one of the most sought-after musicians in the indie scene.

Carl Mayotte
is one of the leading figures in contemporary jazz fusion in Québec. A bassist, composer, arranger, and educator, he stands out for his dazzling virtuosity, impeccable rhythmic precision, and signature sense of groove.

Winner of the Félix Award for Jazz Album of the Year at ADISQ in 2022 and Radio-Canada Jazz Revelation 2020–2021, his musical approach combines technical mastery with expressiveness, captivating both seasoned jazz fans and newcomers alike. A graduate of McGill University with a Master’s degree in Jazz Performance, he blends discipline with stage energy, creating a powerful musical universe that draws on modern jazz, progressive rock, funk, and Latin influences.

As the leader of his own ensemble, the Carl Mayotte Quintet, he delivers bold compositions built on rich harmonies and intricate rhythms. In every performance, Carl is driven by a deep desire to connect with his audience and provide a truly unique experience.

Since the release of Carnaval in the fall of 2023—an album awarded at the GAMIQ and nominated at both the Opus Awards and ADISQ—he has continued to solidify his presence on the national and international stage.

Committed to making jazz more accessible and bringing it to the forefront, he published The Ultimate Jazz Fusion Play-Along for Bass with Hudson Music in 2023, a work that has become a reference for advanced bassists.
