Info for Il Furibondo ou les tribulations d'un italien à Londres (Live at Paris)

Who was Francesco Geminiani? He is an artist unknown to many but if we look at the story of his life we discover a virtuoso violinist and a dedicated teacher. Although it is impossible for us to know truly how he performed, his works tell us quite a lot about his vision of music. His treatise, “The Art of Playing the Violin,” was and still is a work of some significance and a source of inspiration to musicians who play a bowed string instrument and take an especial interest in the Baroque repertoire. His many publications in several European countries bear witness to a degree of success which he achieved in the Eighteenth Century. The man who was nicknamed “Il Furibondo” by his pupils also left us an extraordinarily precise treatise on basso continuo; an essay on guitar; as well as a book entitled, “A Treatise on Good Taste in the Art of Music.” However, Geminiani was also a great composer of instrumental music. In his catalogue, we find several sonatas for violin, an opus for cello, two for harpsichord and, above all, numerous concerti grossi to whose development he contributed. Throughout his life, he paid special attention to his publications, reworking and elaborating them by adding voices and ornaments, which are good lessons for the performer of today. He took remarkable care over mid-range parts. In some works which were written for seven voices, he demonstrated his genius for counterpoint and sophistication, setting himself apart from his peers who often neglected the alto and second violin parts. In his most accomplished pieces, we note the careful attention to transitions. With Geminiani, the concerto was no longer a simple series of movements — as was the case with Arcangelo Corelli, the creator of the genre. Instead, it is a distinct, original instrumental dramaturgy thanks to extremely bold changes of character within the same movement, embellished with recitatives and instrumental arias in the style of opera. In putting together this programme, we have taken Geminiani’s life itself as the main theme, from his youth in Italy to the end of his life in Dublin, passing through Paris and London. When we examine our protagonist’s biography, we discover an eccentric, flamboyant character, just like his music. Il Furibondo has never ceased to amaze and move us. We did not want to string together five or six Concerti for this album but instead dipped into the composer’s repertoire to create a framework with pieces in all the styles which Geminiani explored: the Galant Style (No 11); the Dance (No 28); the Fugue (No 25); the traditional Irish song (No 29); the Aria (No 7 and 27); the Recitation (No 6); the Tempest (No 9); and Ground Bass (No 22)... Some other composers appear in this musical biography: Haendel, who Geminiani admired for his vocal works; Avison, an English contemporary; and finally, Corelli, our Furibondo’s teacher.

By turns, each member of the Escadron takes the floor as a soloist and puts forward his or her character to portray the different aspects of this fascinating life.
