Info for Jeff Beal: The Salvage Men
Praised for it's versatility and keen interest in new music, the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir and it's chief conductor Fredrik Malmberg present a programme devoted to a cappella works in a modern yet accessible style by American or American-born composers. The album opens with a triptych based of adaptations of ancient Gaelic poems, Reincarnations by Samuel Barber, known for his opulent, post-romantic language as expressed in his famous Adagio for Strings.Jeff Beal, one of Hollywood's most prolific and respected composers, wrote The Salvage Men, based on texts by Oscar Wilde and contemporary Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Kay Ryan. This cycle, according to Beal, offers 'a wholly fresh, contemporary view on the themes of transformation and our chosen response to pain'.Daniel Nelson's The New Colossus, based on a text by the 19th-century writer Emma Lazarus inspired by the Statue of Liberty, aims to convey musically the majesty and beauty inherent in the idea of inclusion. Finally, two works by Eric Whitacre, a composer whose works have become popular with vocal ensembles across America: A Boy and a Girl, a delicate piece based on a poem by Octavio Paz, and Three Songs of Faith, on texts by E.E. Cummings, a cycle that presents Whitacre's personal faith and his reflections on the spiritual and the unknowable.

Eric Ericson Chamber Choir
was founded in 1945 by then 27-year-old Eric Ericson, and has since taken a central position in the Swedish and international music scene. Eric Ericson and his choir’s great interest in always finding new music and exploring new areas makes the ensemble’s repertoire very wide to this day: from early music to the latest and newly composed. For generations of Swedish and international composers, the choir has been an ideal ensemble with its typical “Nordic” sound and consistent virtuosity.
To uphold the legacy of Eric Ericson means preserving and developing that unique timbre, deepening the chamber musical attitude and searching out new repertoire. After Eric Ericson passed away in 2013, Fredrik Malmberg was engaged as chief conductor, working alongside Swedish and international guest conductors.
In Eric Ericson Chamber Choir you find Sweden’s foremost ensemble singers who, beyond their own solo singing careers and other important musical endeavours, have chosen to take part in this vital ensemble work.
On the world stage, Eric Ericson Chamber Choir is among the very foremost professional ensembles, and through the years it has been awarded many distinctions. The choir makes several tours abroad each year, but also works educationally with amateur choirs around Sweden.
In its long history, the choir has made numerous recordings, available in the catalogues of many record companies. Highlights of the international work include collaborations with the Swedish Radio Choir and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, James Levine and Riccardo Muti, as well as the many recordings and concerts with Nicolas Harnoncourt and the Concentus Musicus Wien.
Since 2003, Eric Ericson Chamber Choir has a close collaboration with the the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Stockholm Concert Hall. Within the framework of the state budget for culture, the choir has a guaranteed annual support that offers a basic security underneath its freelance work.
Eric Ericson Chamber Choir is a member of TENSO – the European network for professional chamber choirs.
Fredrik Malmberg
His activities include both run as orchestral repertoire, and he has collaborated with ensembles such as DR Vokalensemblet, Swedish Radio Choir, Concerto Copenhagen, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Mariinskyteaterns.
Fredrik Malmberg is also sought after pianist and organist, including with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of conductors such as Daniel Harding and Claudio Abbado.
Fredrik Malmberg has received numerous prizes and awards for his musical work, and in 2012 listed the leading Swedish music magazine Opus him among those who made the most of renewing the tradition-filled art music in Sweden.
In 2012–2024, Fredrik Malmberg held the position of Music Director of the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir. He is Professor of Choral Conducting at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and church musician at Oscar’s parish in Stockholm.
