Info for Solar Music Live (Remix 2024)
SOLAR MUSIC is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year (1974 Ballermann studio album) and you know that we are always good for a surprise. We've been working on it for a long time and kept it a secret until today, but now it's finally here. The result is a digital remix of our concert in Mülheim in 1978, from which the original 16-track tapes still exist.
This live recording showcases the band's unique blend of progressive rock, psychedelic sounds, and improvisational skills.
Originally recorded as 'Suntrip', Grobscnitt's signature track SOLAR MUSIC was first released on their second album 'Ballermann'. With the years, 'Solar Music' changed more and more and became the highlight of the second half of each concert. It was developed from gig to gig and from tour to tour. Between 1976 and 1978 it reached one of its stylistic climaxes in its history and could well reach a length of 50 to 60 minutes live on stage, always accompanied by an immense fire-show celebrated by the roadcrew right between the playing musicians. So it was obvious that the band re-recorded this piece, later leading into the album Solar Music Live. Therefore drummer Eroc had bought himself an 8-track recording machine to catch the song at each gig of the 1978 spring-tour. The version of the 32nd concert on April 17th at the Otto Pankok Highschool Forum in Mülheim (Ruhr) was the one, because sound, performance, atmosphere and length were in perfect match. Later Eroc copied the 8 single tracks with separately recorded guitars, keyboards, drums and vocals to a 16-track tape to apply additional elements like accordion and electronic effects. Then in May and June 1978 the whole creation was mixed by him and the band s sound-engineer Secret Council Cheap at Conny Plank s studio facility. A good reason for presenting this great piece of music again to the old and new followers of the band, this time finally as the ultimate milestone, remastered with the world s best technology by Eroc himself. Especially this legendary version from 1978 for most of the fans was the entry into the world of coarse cut and today still is a wonderful memory of their youth and past and a true companion in these sometimes musically helpless times.
Stefan Danielak (Wildschwein), lead vocals, guitar
Gerd-Otto Kühn (Lupo), guitar, backing vocals
Volker Kahrs (Mist), keyboards, vocals
Wolfgang Jäger (Popo), bass
Joachim Ehrig (Eroc), drums, synthesizer, vocals

Grobschnitt
Their albums "Rockpommel's Land" (1977) and "Solar Music - Live" (1978) are legend. Not only did they bring Zappaesque improvisational madness to German rock music and celebrate progressive moments of glory, their concerts lasting several hours were also spacey jam sessions, theatre-like performances and pure pyromania all in one. Grobschnitt emerged in 1971 from the school band Charing Cross. With the departure of keyboarder Mist and drummer Eroc the golden era of the band ended in 1982/83, in 1989 the "Last Party" tour was the end for the time being. Eroc's lovingly compiled archive recordings series "Die Grobschnitt Story" (1994-2010) and a cross-generational Grobschnitt formation consisting of Willi Wildschwein and sons of various band members, among others, which was active from 2007 to 2012, however, showed that this chapter was far from closed for the musicians. Since then, all albums have been re-released in remastered versions, plus the box set "Solar Movie" - and since 2019, Lupo, Willi Wildschwein and his son Nuki are back on the road as Grobschnitt Acoustic Party on German stages.
