Info for In Cinema

In Cinema is the magnificent and eagerly-anticipated new album from Finnish band Oddarrang. With a new home at innovative UK label Edition Records, Oddarrang s third album stands as their most accomplished to date. Not only have they confirmed the promise of the hugely successful Music Illustrated (2007) and Cathedral (2011) but they ve also developed a formidable reputation as one of the most exciting new acts to emerge from Scandinavia to date. The title In Cinema provides a clue to the darker, edgier, sound of this work compared to the earlier albums. Originally written for four independent films and later developed for the album, these soundscapes are uncompromising, contrasting emotive melodies that reach deep and touch the listener on a very personal level with intense dynamic pick-ups built on potent guitar riffs and uplifting, soaring melodies carried by the unusual cello/trombone front line and underpinned by staunch bass playing. This is jazz at its most uncompromising and experimental, the post-modern influence of bands such as Mogwai and Sigur Ros is clear. Oddarrang are ready for take off; In Cinema is the launch pad.

„Oddarrang are the Finnish ensemble that so impressed at last year's London jazz festival with music that seemed to segue from the laconic lyricism of Ennio Morricone to free jazz to the rock-anthem crescendos of the late Esbjorn Svensson group, featuring a quirky lineup including electric guitar, cello and trombone. Four tracks on this, their third album, were originally written for movies, and they sound like it. At first, it's like a classic north-Euro ECM session, but Lasse Sakara's guitar twang eventually introduces a repeating three-note hook, Ilmari Pohjola's plush trombone tone embraces it, and Osmo Ikonen's cello enters with a melody that could have come from a traditional Irish folk song. Themes as fresh yet familiar-sounding as that turn up throughout, but in settings that are sometimes gentle, sometimes ferociously heated. Missing Tapes from A Highway Set mixes bouzouki-like strummings with a military tattoo, while The Sage is very Morricone-like. There's plenty of jazz in this accessible and sometimes majestic album, but you don't have to be a jazzer to get it.“ (The Guardian)

„A recording closer to the kind of Nordic ambient post-rock of bands such as Sigur Ros but with the kind of minimalistic jazz improv sensibilities that point to the UK's Cinematic Orchestra...A wider audience beckons for Oddarrang's intelligent and highly mesmering cinematic dreamscapes.“ (Jazzwise)

„Oddarrang are special and this is a marvellous album“ (Marlbank)

Oddarrang
Experimental Finnish band Oddarrang make a genre-defying sound, influenced by jazz, classical, world music and postmodern rock. They have been compared to the cool but moving expression of Icelanders like Björk and Sigur Rós – a mesmerising and spiritual sonic soundscape. Oddarrang’s debut album won the Finnish equivalent of the Grammies for best Jazz Album of the Year 2007. Oddarrang’s fascinating mix of musical moods, traditions and their unusual instrumentation (trombone, cello, guitar, acoustic bass and drums) are gaining them more fans at every performance. In Cinema, their third album released in Oct 2013, is a remarkable album that was awarded European Jazz Album of the Year 2013' MARLBANK
