Music has accompanied Jules since he was three years old. He learned piano, drums, guitar, rummaged through his parents' record collection with an alert spirit of discovery, and began writing his own songs quite early. Thanks to the reduction to what is absolutely necessary from an artistic point of view, "Melancholic Dreamwave" contains the essence that makes Jules Ahoi so special as an artist: compositions between classical songwriting and delightful experimentation; lyrics that are fed by his own experiences and adventures and become interesting for the listener because they deal with big topics that concern us all - and they do so in a coded and powerful enough way to pose riddles, trigger associations, initiate trains of thought even on repeated listening.

The use of old 70s drum machines, which runs through the entire album, forms its musical backbone. "Melancholic Dreamwave" is not a concept album in the prog rock sense, but it forms a unity. Nothing happens here by chance. The fact that "U Bloom, Still" is followed by "To Make A Heart Beat", a potential hit with subtle pop appeal, is just as effective as the dramaturgy of the last third of the album. The record really picks up speed with "Lost In The Light", a homage to Ahoi's favourite band The Police, before it ends with the title track. Melancholic Dreamwave" refers to the gyroscopes of thought that drag you down and prevent you from falling asleep. In keeping with the subject matter, Jules Ahoi has conceived the last song as a Stream of Consciousness, another example of the artful interplay of content and form. It is the final exclamation point of an album full of wonderful melodies and clever decisions that is endlessly enjoyable to listen to and gives you plenty of food for discovery and thought. Wenn JULES AHOI mit seiner fünfköpfigen Band auf die Bühne geht, schweben alle im Raum auf einer gemeinsamen musikalischen Welle. Bekannt geworden ist der deutsche Singer-Songwriter mit seinem „Saltwaterfolk“, den er in Liedern wie „Robinson Crusoe“ oder „Salt & Sun“ manifestiert hat. 2020 stehen für JULES AHOI alle Zeichen auf Veränderung, künstlerische Weiterentwicklung und intensive Verarbeitung eines neuen Lebensabschnitts. Das musikalische Ergebnis dieser Umbruchphase: Das im Juni 2020 veröffentlichte Album „DEAR ____“. „Ich habe zum ersten Mal in meinem Leben das Gefühl, angekommen zu sein“, so JULES AHOI. Die erste Singleauskopplung „3 AM“ war der Auftakt einer Platte, auf der viel Unerwartetes und Überraschendes geschieht – erstaunliche Wendungen und Brüche, reizvolle Variationen überkommener Konventionen, die Integration von Sounds aus dem iPhone-Speicher und von Stilmitteln aus ganz unterschiedlichen Genres. Musikalisch ist „DEAR ____“ ein gewaltiger Schritt nach vorne geworden – fort vom reinen Folk und Folkrock hin zu etwas, was man auf der Suche nach Etikettierungen als Alternative Pop, Art Pop oder Art Folk bezeichnen mag. Neben der soundtechnischen Wandlung ist aber auch ein neues Mindset von JULES AHOIerkennbar. Mit 18 Jahren zog er ans Meer – erst nach Kiel, anschließend an die französische Atlantikküste. Dort entdeckte er das Surfen für sich und verdiente seine Brötchen als Surflehrer, mit Modeljobs und Straßenmusik. Das Lebensgefühl an der Küste nutzte er als Inspirationsquelle für eine Vielzahl an Songs. Wo im 2016 erschienenen Debütalbum „Between Lines“, in „EUPHORIA / fragments“ (2017) und der EP „Echoes“ (2019) ehrlich-verträumte Soundlandschaften thematisch orientiert am Ausreißen und dem Freiheitsgefühl am Meer zu hören sind, handelt „DEAR ____“ vom Ende des Vagabund-Lebens. JULES AHOI beschäftigt sich mit dem Schaffen eines Zuhauses und setzt sich mit Gefühlen wie Verständnislosigkeit, Ohnmacht und persönlichen Verlusten wie dem seines Vaters auseinander. Mit 30 Jahren fasst er zusammen, was ihn als Mensch und Künstler bewegt, erschüttert, begeistert, bestürzt hat. Eines der 15 Songbeispiele dafür: Die zweite Single „Oh, Agnes“ – ein Lied, das von Erziehung und Geschlechterrollen handelt, von Identität und deren Entstehungsprozess. „DEAR ____“ ist ohne jeden Zweifel eine zutiefst persönliche Platte. Weil JULES AHOI jedoch universelle Themen anspricht und eine ebenso emotionale wie klug durchdachte Soundsprache dafür gefunden hat, dürfen sich alle von ihr angesprochen fühlen, die ein Mindestmaß an Empathie und ein Herz für spannende Kunst haben. Auf den Unterstrich des Albumtitels kann jeder und jede einen anderen Namen einsetzen. JULES AHOI würde „Papa“ dorthin schreiben, vielleicht auch „Mama“ – oder den Namen seiner Ex-Freundin. Nachdem er mit seiner Band über 200 Konzerte, zwei fast ausverkaufte Tourneen und vier Showcases auf dem Reeperbahnfestival 2019 gespielt hat, gilt diese ganz persönliche Einladung auch allen Musikliebhaber/innen, die ihn live erleben wollen.
