Info for Mozart & Strauss: Oboe Concertos

“I couldn’t have imagined a better constellation for my first album!” says Cristina Gómez Godoy about her first recording. She has chosen this repertoire because these pieces made her fall in love with the instrument and music. As a musician in Daniel Barenboim’s Berlin-based orchestra, she feels very privileged to have recorded her first album with him, accompanied by the West Eastern Divan Orchestra, with whom she has played for many years.

For the album, the oboist chose the two works that once made her fall in love with her instrument: the only oboe concerto by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Richard Strauss. Both compositions are united by a lightness and grace that is almost surprising in Straussʼ older work, which was composed in 1945 directly after the end of the Second World War, perhaps as a relieved reaction to it. Like Strauss, Mozart gives the warm sound of the oboe plenty of space with transparent orchestration and lets it sing. In Mozart's case literally: he worked the aria "Welche Wonne, welche Lust" from the Singspiel "Entführung aus dem Serail" into the third movement as the main theme.

In the meantime, Cristina Gómez Godoy has made guest appearances as a "Rising Star" of the European Concert Hall Organisation at the major concert halls in Europe. In the current season she is presenting her own programme at the Konzerthaus Dortmund in the three-year series "Junge Wilde".

Cristina Gómez Godoy
is one of the most exciting oboists of her generation. At age twenty-one, she joined the Staatskapelle Berlin as solo cor anglais. In 2013, she was appointed principal solo oboist of the orchestra under the baton of Daniel Barenboim. Furthermore, she is since October 2015 an adjunct professor at the Universität der Künste Berlin (UdK).

Born in 1990 in Linares, Spain, Cristina Gómez Godoy has been widely praised by the international press for her »wonderfully warm, supple tone« (Deutschlandfunk) and her expressive playing. She has appeared as a soloist in other world leading orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Filarmonica della Scala di Milano.

She played under renowned conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Riccardo Muti, Zubin Mehta and Andris Nelsons at international venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York, the Pierre Boulez Saal, Konzerthaus Berlin and the prestigious Ravinia Festival in the USA.

Being an avid chamber musician, Cristina Gómez Godoy has collaborated with numerous esteemed artists including Daniel Barenboim, Guy Braunstein, Claire Huangci and the Calidore String Quartet. She received numerous awards such as the ARD Competition in Munich.
