Info for The Second Time Around (The Dutch Heritage Series)
The ‘First Lady of Jazz’ Rita Reys (1924-2013) started her singing career at the age of 16. It caused a slight sensation back in 1965, when the iconic singer Rita Reys announced the making of an album with the American grandmaster Oliver Nelson: a man with a great track record as the arranger on key recordings such as The Blues And The Abstract Truth. Rita Reys wasn’t very enthusiastic about the project (“I just don't fit in well with a big band”), but the arrangements were excellent. The original manuscripts were discovered by the Netherlands Jazz Archive in 2023, and used for the Dutch Jazz Heritage concert series: a collaboration between the Dutch Jazz Archive and the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw. Two generations of Dutch jazz vocalists interpret these timeless arrangements; among them Fay Claassen, who is often viewed as the successor to Rita Reys. The younger talent Anna Serierse can use her voice both as a soloist and as an instrument, and the Belgian singer Esther Van Hees is a versatile vocalist with a deep love for jazz and lyrical tunes.

Anna Serierse
(1993) is one of Holland’s upcoming Dutch jazz vocalists. From a very early age it was clear that she wanted pursue a career in music, while growing up in a musical household. Listening to Ella Fitzgerald, Chet Baker and big bands like the Count Basie Orchestra and the Dutch Skymasters, she immersed herself with the jazz tradition.
During her bachelor studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam (2013-2017) she formed a quartet with Gijs Idema, Cas Jiskoot and Tim Hennekes. In this quartet Idema & Serierse focus on finding the perfect blend between their two instruments. They released their debut album MOTUS on DOX records in November 2020. This album was nominated for an Edison Award.
Their second album CLOUD STUDIES released in 2023.
For their third album Serenade in Blue, the quartet decided to go back to the music in which they found each other, the standards from the great american songbook. It’s an ode to their grandparents and to the music they love so deeply. Serenade in Blue released April 11th 2025 in DOX Records.
For Serierse the most important things are communication and connection. Connecting with the musicians she shares the stage with, as well as with the people she sings for. While communicating through melodies, lyrics and wordless improvisations, Anna strives to create an intimate atmosphere during her concerts.
Over de past years Serierse has been very fortunate to play with lots of different bands and ensembles, as a front- and sidewoman. She is equally at home in the traditional jazz repertoire, contemporary jazz and free improvisation as well as Brazilian music, performing with small groups, larger ensembles, orchestras and bigbands. Serierse has been performing at well known festivals and venues like North Sea Jazz Festival, InJazz, Bimhuis, TivoliVredenburg and LantarenVenster. Recently she toured in countries such as India, Thailand, Hungary, Germany, Norway, Denmark, England, France and China.
In 2023, Anna won an Edison award in the category Nationaal Vocaal, for her collaboration with Benjamin Herman, True Love’s Flame.
Besides performing with her own quartet, Anna is currently working intensively with the Kika Sprangers Quintet/Large Ensemble. She is also co-leading Brazilian close harmony group Cantorias, together with Femke Smit, Nina Rompa & Lilian Vieira. Their debut album Cantorias was awarded with an Edison award in the category Nationaal Vocaal in 2024.
Anna is a jazz vocals main subject teacher at the Tilburg Conservatorium.
Esther Van Hees
(born 1991), originally from Belgium, obtained a bachelor's degree in jazz singing from the Tilburg Conservatory, followed by a master's degree in jazz singing from the Amsterdam Conservatory. In 2013, the year she graduated, she received the Conservatory Talent Award.
In 2013, Esther released her debut EP, "Got Wings." In 2016 and 2018, she released two albums under the name "Esther en Mateusz" with guitarist Mateusz Pulawski. In 2019, Esther released an album under her own name featuring arrangements of Dutch songs by artists like Ramses Shaffy, with Jeroen van Vliet on piano and Miguel Boelens on sax. She is currently working on a second album with this band. Esther's second project is called "Blue Sands," a duo with electric bassist Reindert Kragt (whom she met in 2013 during the Conservatory Talent Award finals, in which Reindert also participated). In 2020, the duo released their EP "Flowers Made of Clay," and their first full-length album will be released in the spring of 2022. In addition to these projects, Esther is a vocalist with Spanish trumpeter Natanael Ramos's sextet "Islander's Dilemma." With this band, she has toured Tenerife, Colombia, and Chile.
Since 2020, Esther has been working (online) as a vocal technique teacher at the Conservatory of Suriname.
Fay Claassen
The Dutch power woman of jazz, Fay Claassen, is one of the best-known and most diverse singers in The Netherlands and belongs to the European top. Fay is a musical phenomenon, known for her elegance and delicacy; a sophisticated singer who does not shy away from crossovers and other genres. She knows how to move her audiences with ease with her endearing voice.
“Fay Claassen is to singing what Audrey Hepburn was to the movies: elegant and graceful“ (American jazz magazine CADENCE)
Fay Claassen received many prestigious (inter)national music prizes. In 2022 she won her fourth Edison Jazz Award, making her the only Dutch contemporary vocalist to have this to her name. She also received a Golden Record and the Chet Baker Award. Fay is a regular guest with the most renowned big bands and orchestras, from the Metropole Orchestra and Brussels Jazz Orchestra to Danish Radio Big Band and WDR Big Band. In May 2023 the new album, Symphonic Stories, is released in collaboration with the classical Residentie Orchestra from The Hague. Fay performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival for nine times, and she is also frequently invited as a guest teacher at conservatories, such as Amsterdam and Antwerp.
