Info for Schubert: Winterreise

On his first recording, French baritone Edwin Crossley-Mercer is joined by pianist Yoan Héreau for a performance of Schubert’s Winterreise.

Edwin Crossley-Mercer’s mother, painter Claudine Franck, was also inspired by this masterpiece and she has created a painting for each Winterreise Lied.

Following Müller and Schubert’s inspiration, the character in this frightening story appears in each illustration and is never the same. This traveller brings a symbolic and prophetic interpretation to everything he sees and takes us with him into the depths of the human soul, whose secrets could only be revealed by Schubert.

Edwin Crossley-Mercer, baritone
Yoan Hereau, piano

Edwin Crossley-Mercer
performs on the most prestigious international opera and concert stages. After studying sacred music at Versailles, then opera and Lied with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in Berlin, he made his debut in 2006 at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, notably under the direction of Daniel Barenboim in Doktor Faustus, Der Freischütz and The merry widow.

In 2009 he sang Guglielmo (Così fan tutte) at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, then made his debut the following season at the Opéra National de Paris in Ariadne auf Naxos (Harlekin) by R. Strauss. Since then he has performed in many works of the repertoire on the stages of the Opera Bastille and the Palais Garnier: Die Zauberflöte, Carmen, Arabella, The Merry widow, La damnation de Faust, Così fan tutte, l’Enfant et es sortilèges, Les Indes galantes …

His engagements lead him to the United States (Manon by J. Massenet and Le Nozze di Figaro), Japan (Beatrice and Benedict), South America (Don Giovanni in Chile) as well as throughout Europe and Russia, both in the baroque repertoire (Hippolyte et Aricie, les Boréades, Castor et Pollux and Platée by J.P. Rameau, as well as operas by J.B. Lully), classical (especially W.A. Mozart), Rossinian (La Cenerentola, Guillaume Tell), Puccinian (Tosca, Madama Butterfly or La Bohème) or even in contemporary works. His particular affection for oratorios and recital has always been an essential component of his musical life : from Carnegie Hall in New-York, to the Paris Philharmonie, Tokyo Suntory Hall, Montevideo and Saint Petersburg, he performs Lieder and Art songs in collaboration with numerous accompanying pianists and sings under the baton of prestigious conductors, such as those of the Berliner Philharmoniker, Wiener Symphoniker, the Orchestre National de Radio France, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, etc.

Winner of the HSBC Foundation Award in 2007 and 1st prize in the Nadia and Lili Boulanger competition, nominated twice for the Grammy Awards, he has recorded numerous works from the baroque repertoire as well as Melodies by Nadia Boulanger for Delos. He collaborates with American composer Michael Linton, with whom he recorded two albums of his works (Carmina Catulli as well as Songs of Oscar Wilde). Accompanied by Yoan Héreau, Die Winterreise by Franz Schubert marks the first recording of Edwin Crossley-Mercer’s for Mirare records.
