Matthew Waldren
is the English National Opera Mackerras Fellow 2016. Born in Geneva‚ of Anglo-Ghanaian descent, he studied at the Royal College of Music in London‚ before reading music at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge University and later studying as a post-graduate at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. After a 10-year career as an opera singer‚ he swiftly gained a reputation as a "dynamic" young conductor. Particularly at home conducting opera‚ he has been universally praised by the critics and described as an “exceptional talent” by conductor Mark Wigglesworth.

Most recent and upcoming engagements include La Rondine, La bohème for Opera Holland Park, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Texting Heer for Royal Opera House, Lakmé and Il Barbiere di Siviglia for Opera Holland Park‚ Don Giovanni and La bohème (assistant & cover conductor) for English National Opera, Pelléas et Mélisande (assistant & cover conductor) for Scottish Opera, and his debut with the Orchestra of Scottish Opera. His debut studio album, Will Todd's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, was released in 2015 and entered the official specialist classical chart at number one. The disc has been critically-acclaimed and has been heard on BBC Radio 3.

Matthew is deeply proud of his long-standing association with Opera Holland Park, for whom he has previously conducted critically-acclaimed performances of Lakmé, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Les Pêcheurs de Perles‚ Will Todd’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland‚ Gianni Schicchi‚ Zanetto‚ Rigoletto‚ and Fantastic Mr Fox. In 2012 he was appointed Music Director of the inaugural Christine Collins Young Artist Scheme at OHP.

Further engagements include La Traviata (Opera Lyrica)‚ Peter Grimes (Co-Opera-Co.)‚ The Yeomen of the Guard (Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company‚ National Festival Orchestra)‚ the World Premiere of Strekosa I Muravej (Tête a Tête and Grimeborn festivals) - shortlisted in the Flourish Opera Competition‚ workshops for English National Ballet and Carmen with the Royal Opera House Community Chorus. Matthew mentors and coaches young musicians at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge University.

Between 2009 and 2011, Matthew was Chorus Master at Opera Holland Park‚ and prepared the chorus for La Bohème‚ Orpheus in the Underworld‚ Pelléas et Melisande‚ Carmen‚ Fidelio‚ Don Giovanni‚ Francesca da Rimini‚ La Forza del Destino‚ L’Amico Fritz‚ Le Nozze di Figaro and Rigoletto. He has worked as a cover conductor for John Owen Edwards‚ Stuart Stratford and Manlio Benzi‚ has worked alongside Sir Mark Elder on Ravel’s Piano Concerto for Left Hand with the Hallé orchestra and Wozzeck at the Royal Opera House.

Matthew regularly conducts opera galas, highlights including the Centenary Gala Concert and World War I Memorial Gala Concert at the Chelsea Flower Show. His work has taken him to eclectic festivals including Watercity‚ Camp Bestival and Harvest, and 2015 sees his debut conducting at the Wilderness Festival. Matthew works regularly with the London Mozart Players and the City of London Sinfonia, and has conducted the orchestra of English National Opera.
