Info for Varða

“When we write our music, we are inspired by our environment,” says Hugar of the new track. “Through the window of our studio our surroundings are the snow covered mountains, the sea and the harbour just outside Reykjavík. The title of the song ‘Saga’ is an old Icelandic word meaning story. In a way, this song represents a story. A story that is supposed to challenge the imagination of the listener, there is no limit on imagination.”

Atmospheric post-rock duo Hugar have announced a multi-album worldwide record deal with Sony USA. “Hugar is one of the most exciting young bands from Iceland where musical boundaries don’t exist,” says Per Hauber, Managing Director of Sony Masterworks International. “With their profound, broad musical background knowledge, Pétur and Bergur create a unique sound that will thrill a large audience far beyond any country or genre boundaries. We are very excited to start this long term partnership with Hugar.” New music is in the pipes for Autumn release and Hugar will play live at Airwaves in November.

Breakout Icelandic feminist rap collective Reykjavíkurdætur have been nominated for the Music Moves Europe Talent Awards, which secedes the European Border Breakers Awards (EBBA). This music prize is run by the European Commission and implemented by respected Eurosonic music industry festival, where the band have previously performed. The aim of the prize is to “celebrate new and upcoming artists from Europe and support them in order to help them develop and accelerate their international careers.” So we hope the prize is a nice amount, to help cover some expenses for the band’s many, many members. And that the new awards run with the acronym MMETA.

Hugar

HUGAR
Icelandic natives HUGAR – comprised of multitalented instrumentalists and musicians Bergur Þórisson and Pétur Jónsson – have forged a musical lane all their own with a genre-defying sound. Combining a shared passion for music and an impressive resume working alongside fellow Icelandic luminaries Björk, Sigur Rós, Ólafur Arnalds and Johann Johannson, the longtime friends and natives of Seltjarnarnes began writing music together in 2013. Through a series of impromptu sessions, Bergur and Pétur recorded and released their independent self-titled debut Hugar the following year, making it available for free on their website. The sweepingly multi-layered and ethereally ambient album quickly amassed an organic following of listeners and has since racked up over 35 million streams worldwide on Spotify alone. With acclaim from tastemakers like The Line of Best Fit and The Independent, Hugar now gears up for the next step in their musical journey, having recently signed to Sony Music Masterworks. The highly-anticipated new music is set to arrive alongside a robust touring schedule of headlining shows in Europe and Asia as well as festival appearances, including Hugar’s third consecutive year playing the Iceland Airwaves festival.
