Info for On a Clear Day

The path ‘from the Romantic to the Avant Garde’ may seem at first sight a straightforward one, perhaps along a line from approachability to difficulty, from melody to fragment, or from harmony to dissonance. But first sight is rarely 20/20, as the particular path Claudia Maria Racovicean has chosen for this disc suggests. By ear alone it is relatively simple to place the composers here on the historical timeline. More enjoyable, however, and the reason we listen to them together, is to twist that line into knots and loops that reveal connections across history.

Claudia Maria Racovicean, piano

Claudia Maria Racovicean
London-based pianist Claudia Maria Racovicean is a uniquely versatile and engaging musician, equally at home in the music of the composers of her generation as she is in classical repertoire ranging from Bach to Rachmaninoff.

Her playing has been described as “spirited and sensitive” by the Financial Times, and her debut album was recently released internationally on Coviello Classics.

Romanian pianist Claudia Maria Racovicean has performed solo Bach alongside world and UK premieres of chamber music at the Spitalfields Festival, and gave the UK premiere of Lee Hyla’s My Life on the Plains at the Huddersfield Festival of Contemporary Music in 2015. Her debut album, On A Clear Day, features music from the romantic to the avant-garde including Copland, Liszt, Debussy, Matthias Pintscher and transcriptions of Hugo Wolf songs for solo piano.

Claudia has performed live from the Southbank on BBC Radio 3 and – as co-princpal pianist of The Riot Ensemble – has worked closely with living composers such as Helga Arias Parra, Djuro Zivkovic, and the New Music Brighton Composers Collective in giving more than two-dozen World and UK premieres.

Internationally, Claudia has performed throughout Romania, Northern Ireland, Hungary, Italy, Germany and Austria, and has performed multiple concerti with orchestras including the Arad Philharmonic Orchestra and Timisoara Symphony Orchestra. Claudia received both her BM and MMus in Piano Performance at the Royal Academy of of Music, where she studied with Ian Fountain.
