Info for Reinecke: Cello Concerto
Sometimes, great music is forgotten and overlooked. Like a precious gem or piece of gold buried in the dirt – with the passage of time people fail to remember. The forgotten Cello Concerto, composed by the gifted and prolific Carl Reinecke is one of those lost gems that deserve a dusting off and a return into the repertoire.
Nashville Symphony Orchestra cellist Michael Samis has undertaken a daunting task – resurrecting Carl Reinecke’s Cello Concerto Op.82. Mr. Samis rediscovered the little-known Romantic era piece while searching for unique repertoire for his debut solo album.
Backed by the Gateway Chamber Orchestra (in which he is also a member), he’ll be bringing his cellistic chops to both the Reinecke and Ernest Ansermet’s 1943 orchestration of Schumann’s Adagio and Allegro. The album will also include two solo works for cello – John Tavener’s Threnos and Ernest Bloch’s Suite #1 - as well as Osvaldo Golijov’s Mariel, with Eric Willie on marimba.
Michael Samis, cello
