Info for J. S. Bach: The Complete Works for Keyboard, Vol. 10: Trio Sonatas, BWV 525-530 - Notebook for A.M. Bach
After stopping off in Cöthen, Benjamin Alard continues his musical journey through the works of J. S. Bach. Here he focuses on the composer’s early years in Leipzig, with the six Trio Sonatas, which he performs on harpsichord and clavichord. The famous ‘little keyboard book’ of Anna Magdalena takes us into the more intimate world of the Kantor’s household.

Benjamin Alard
Benjamin’s principal passion has always been the music of J.S. Bach and it was for his interpretation of this great composer that he was awarded first prize in the 2004 International Harpsichord Competition in Bruges.
While still quite young he began studying music in his hometown in Dieppe, France. He was soon drawn to the organ and entered the Conservatory of Rouen where he studied with Louis Thiry and François Ménissier.
He was first introduced to the harpsichord by Elizabeth Joyé, with whom he studied in Paris before going on, in 2003, to the Schola Cantorum in Basel to work with Jörg-Andreas Bôtticher, Jean-Claude Zehnder and Andrea Marcon.
Since 2005 he has been organist of the Bernard Aubertin organ in the church of Saint-Louis-en-l’Ile in Paris where each season he gives concerts about the music of Bach.
Today Benjamin Alard divides his time between performing recitals and chamber music on both the harpsichord and organ. He often performs repertoire for two harpsichords with Elisabeth Joyé, in duo with the violinist Francois Fernandez or in trio but also with Emmanuel Pahud. He is regularly invited to perform as soloist in music series in Europe, Japan and North America.
Benjamin Alard has recorded for the label Hortus and has made several recordings of works by J. S. Bach for Alpha (Sonatas in trio, Clavier Übung I and II). His recordings have consistently received high praise from the press and have been awarded multiple prizes.
He now devotes himself to the complete works for harpsichord and organ solo of Johann Sebastian Bach for harmonia mundi. Nine boxes, of 17, are already available. Volume 3, “À la française”, was the recipient of the presitigous Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkrik (German Record Critics' Award). The release of volume 5, “Weimar 1708-1713 - Toccatas and Fuges” was followed in March of 2022 by the publication of volume 6, the first book of “The Well-Tempered Clavier”, marking the work’s 300th anniversary. This recording got the award “Recording of the month” by Gramophone and the famous “Diapason d’or” awarded by the French magazine Diapason. In October 2022, harmonia mundi has published a boxed-set of Benjamin Alard’s recordings dedicated to Bach’s “Orgelbüchlein”.
It is in the spirit of cult by associating an amateur choir, the Ensemble vocal Bergamasque, and a children's choir, the Maîtrise de Notre-Dame de Paris, that Benjamin Alard recorded the Orgelbüchlein published at the fall 2022. May 2023 saw the release of volume 8 dedicated to Maria Barbara, the first wife of Johann Sebastian Bach. Volume 9 was released early May 2024 and is devoted to “Köthen, the Happy Years” but before that, during the winter of 2024, a Manuel de Falla CD was released with which harmonia mundi has associated Benjamin Alard. There he performed the concerto for harpsichord and five instruments and played the harpsichord part in “ El retablo by Maese Pedro” with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra conducted by Pablo Heras-Casado.
The 10th volume of the complete cycle will be devoted to the 6 Sonatas in trio and the "Little Book of Anna-Magdalena Bach", with publication scheduled for Spring 2025.
Benjamin Alard performs regularly in the main musical venues around the world, from Paris to Tokyo, via Boston, Madrid, Barcelona, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium.
Gerlinde Sämann
The blind German soprano Gerlinde Sämann was born in Nürnberg.
She studied as a pianist and a singer at the Richard-Strauss-Konservatorium in Munich. In addition she completed her education as a Breath-Therapist according to the method of Ilse Middendorf. In 2000 she received a scholarship for her extraordinary artistic work of the city of Munich.
Gerlinde Sämann's repertoire comprises not only music of the middleages, Renaissance, Baroque and Classic, but also of Romantic Lied, Oratorio and modern Avant-garde music and -theater. But in spite of this large miscellaneousness her focus lies on the pre-Classical repertoire.
As a soloist the soprano works with ensembles like the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Dresdner Kreuzchor, RIAS-Kammerchor, Dresdner Kammerchor, Ensemble Estampie, Armonico Tributo Austria, Himmlische Cantorey, Sette Voci, il Gardellino, Dresdner Philharmonie, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and others. She sang under the direction of musicians like Hans-Christoph Rademann, Ton Koopman, Sir Roger Norrington, Jan De Winne, Marcel Ponseele oder Howard Arman.
A long time collaboration with Sigiswald Kuijken and his La Petite Bande let to numerous concerts and CD recordings, especially of the cantatas and oratories of J.S. Bach.
Apart from this she often works on the opera stage, under others with stage directors like Arila Siegert, Gil Mehmert, Sabine Hasz, Thomas Höft, Chrescencia Dünser or Otto Kukla.
Thus she sang on most of the prominent festivals and concert stages of Europe, for instance the Styriarte Graz, Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht, Festival Van Vlaanderen Gent, La folle journée de Nantes, Festa da Musica Lissabon, Festival de Vezelay Bourgogne, Festival Europäische Kirchenmusik Schwäbisch Gmünd, Rheingau Musikfestival, Berlinder Konzerthaus, Philharmonie Dresden, Singel Antwerp or Concertgebouw Bruges.
Her special quality is without question her subtle musicality, which creates particular sensitive interpretations, distinguishing themselfs - perhaps just because of her lacking eyesight - through a unusual diversity of colours in sound and an intensity which always enchants her audience.
Gerlinde Sämann has been broadcasted nationally and internationally and several CDs have been produced in Germany and abroad.
