Info for J.S. Bach: Cello Suites, Vol. 2 (Arr. J. McFadden for Guitar)

J.S. Bach’s Cello Suites are believed to have been written in the Saxon town of Cöthen between 1717 and 1723. They stand near the apex of Bach’s compositions for a single instrument and contain some of his most beautiful and vivid writing. Jeffrey McFadden’s guitar arrangements augment these elements with their own harmonic complexity, creating a new string medium for these epochal works. Volume 1, containing the first three suites, is on 8.573625. ‘McFadden's ability to make the guitar sing is second to none’ (Daily Telegraph, UK).

"Completing Johann Sebastian Bach’s six unaccompanied Cello Suites, my June review of the first disc welcomed Jeffrey McFadden’s arrangement for solo guitar.

At the same time I posed the question whether the arrangement would have been similar to a Bach transcription for Baroque Lute? There is no easy answer to that, for you cannot bridge the gap on a change from the smooth lines created by the cello to that very different sound from an instrument of plucked strings. So forget Bach’s original, and listen to a very differing group of suites. At the same time we can admire and enjoy McFadden’s performance of his new creations that often challenging the dexterity of the performer’s right hand. Listen, for instance, to track 15, the Courante of the Sixth Suite, for his sheer virtuosity. Certainly we have to accept the limited dynamic range of the guitar compared to the cello, and the legato requirement of the Sarabands has to be sacrificed. Throughout the articulation of the famous Canadian is spotlessly clean, and he has the benefit of the impeccable Canadian recording team who capture an ideal guitar sound. If you have not already purchased my highly recommended first volume, it comes on 8.573625." (David Denton, David’s Review Corner)
