At first trained in law, the French composer and conductor Joseph Guy Ropartz studied composition with Massenet and then with Csar Franck. He spent much of his career in Nancy and then in Strasbourg, before retiring to his native Brittany, this last a continuing influence on his music.
Joseph-Guy Ropartz is now seen as one of the major figures of French music at the beginning of the 20th century. Composer of stature, from an old Guingamp family, he was also a novelist and poet, talented administrator (head of the conservatories of Nancy then Strasbourg), conductor and professor of composition. A vast culture and profound Catholic faith underlie the life as much as the work of this humanist, in whom were harmoniously combined a strong feeling for Nature, the heritage of his mentor, César Franck, the harmonic innovations of Fauré and Debussy, and the rich folklore of his native Brittany. But reducing his impact to a simple regionalism would minimise Ropartz. Lorraine and Alsace were equally a second fatherland for him — to which the ‘Vosgian landscape’ of the Cello Sonata No. 1 bears witness. But above all, by the synthesis of the quasi-philosophical profundity that is the basis of his musical thinking with sovereign balance and perfection of form and writing, his music embodies the essence of l’esprit français, which is illustrated remarkably by the sonatas recorded here, all three being representative of the noble, serene beauty that distinguishes Ropartz’s art. …
