Trotz der begeisterten Reaktionen auf seine ersten Opern war Gaetano Donizetti noch jung und ziemlich unerfahren, als er 1822 den Auftrag erhielt, „Chiara e Serafina“ für die Mailänder Scala zu schreiben. Das in aller Eile komponierte Werk stieß bei der Premiere vornehmlich auf Ablehnung und verschwand danach spurlos. Dank der Wiederaufführung beim Donizetti-Festival in Bergamo kehrte „Chiara e Serafina“ schließlich nach genau 200 Jahren auf die Bühne zurück: eine unterhaltsame Geschichte über Piraten, Liebhaber, Verkleidungen, Betrug und Gefahren im Mallorca des 17. Jahrhunderts.

is since long time appreciated guest of many important theatres around the world, among them the Staatsoper Vienna, the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Liceo in Barcelona, the Festival in Aix-en-provence, the Staatsoper Hamburg, Semperoper Dresden, Oper Zuerich, owing his status as internationally renowned performer to his interpretations of leading roles mostly in the repertory of Mozart, Rossini and Donizetti, like ‘Figaro’ in ‘IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA’ (available on DVD), ‘Figaro’ and ‘Conte Almaviva’ in LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, the title role of DON GIOVANNI, ‘Don Alfonso’ in COSÌ FAN TUTTE, ‘Dandini’ and ‘Don Magnifico’ in LA CENERENTOLA, ‘Belcore’ and ‘Dulcamara’ in L’ELISIR D’AMORE, ‘Sulpice’ in LA FILLE DU REGIMENT, ‘Malatesta’ in DON PASQUALE, but in the last years also added successfully not only the title role of Verdi’s FALSTAFF, a row of further roles outside his former ‘classic Belcanto repertory’, such as ‘Fra Melitone’/LA FORZA DEL DESTINO in Las Palmas and at the Semperoper Dresden, ‘Sharpless’ /MADAME BUTTERFLY at the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, and in 2020, a moving ‘Michonnet’ in Cilea’s ADRIANA LECOUVREUR, again at the Teatro Petruzzelli Bari.

In recent times, he also developed his activity as teacher and coach, establishing fruitful relationships with the ‘Accademia della Scala’ in Milan, the private ‘Sedat Gürel-Güzin Arts & Science’ Foundation in Istanbul and projects with the ‘Fundaciòn Ibañez’ Atkinson in Santiago del Cile. He furthermore held different Masterclasses so far for the ‘Matisse Opera Studio’ in Valencia, the ‘Santa Cecilia’ Conservatory in Rome and the ‘Antonio Vivaldi’ Conservatory in Alessandria.

Among his numerous commitments of the last two decades we recall (Dandini) at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, ‘Don Magnifico’ in Vienna and Hamburg, and ‘Alidoro’ in LA CENERENTOLA at the Semperoper Dresden; L’ELISIR D’AMORE (Dulcamara) at the Met in New York, Staatsoper Vienna and Staatsoper Hamburg; LA FILLE DU REGIMENT (Suplice) at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Oper Zurich, and Opéra Royal de Wallonie Liège; IL VIAGGIO A REIMS (Don Profondo) at the Liceo Barcelona and Teatro Municipal Santiago del Cile; VIVA LA MAMMA (role debut ‘Procolo) in Zurich; COSI FAN TUTTE (Don Alfonso) at the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich as well as in a new production of the Staatsoper Hamburg and at Teatro alla Scala Milan and the Abao in Bilbao; L’ITALIANA IN ALGERI at the Opera Zurich; IL MATRIMONIO SEGRETO at La Scala Milan; ‘Rimbaud’ in LE COMTE ORY at the Opera Montecarlo; FALSTAFF at the Staatsoper Hamburg.

He also has debuted all three roles (Prosdocimo, Selim, Don Geronio) in IL TURCO IN ITALIA, between Aix-en-provence, Rossini Opera Festival, Zurich, Toulouse, Dresden, Bilbao, Teatro Real in Madrid, sang both roles (Don Pasquale and Malatesta) in DON PASQUALE, between Theatre La Monnaie in Bruxelles, Staatsoper Vienna. He furthermore debutet ‘Don Bartolo’ in IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA at the Rossini Opera Festival in 2018 where he returned again in summer 2021 for a new production of IL SIGNOR BRUSCHINO, and debuted too at the Donizetti Bergamo Festival with CHIARA E SERAFINO in 2022.

He kicked off 2024 with FALSTAFF a the Royal Opéra Wallonie in Liège followed by a new production of LA RONDINE (Rambaldo) at the Teatro alla Scala Milan and again FALSTAFF, this time at the Teatro Sao Carlos in Lisbon, then made his debut at the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago in TURANDOT, in both roles ‘Ping’ and ‘Mandarino’ contemporarily in the same performance by will of the stage director Pier Luigi Pizzi.

In season 2024-25 he performs in his first Zarzuela, MARINA’ at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, before debuting ‘GIANNI SCHICCHI’ at the New National Theatre in Tokyo, returning to the Scala Milan for Gassmann’s OPERA SERIA in the role of ‘Fallito’, to the Opera Zurich for the title role in DON PASQUALE, to Las Palmas for ‘Sharpless’ in MADAME BUTTERFLY, and in summer 2025 to the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro for a revival of IL TURCO IN ITALIA, this time as ‘Selim’. He also will hold a Recital and leading a Masterclass in Montréal/Canada.

Sesto Quatrini
(born 1984 in Rome) studied trumpet, conducting and composition, graduating from the “A. Casella” Conservatory, L’Aquila, and the “Claudio Abbado” Civica Scuola di Musica, Milan. He has been assistant conductor to Fabio Luisi at the New York Metropolitan Opera and at the Festival della Valle d’Itria, where in 2017 he made his Italian opera debut with Verdi’s Un giorno di regno.

From 2018 to 2023 he was artistic director of the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre. During his tenure, he conducted I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Il barbiere di Siviglia, La Bohème, Candide, Madama Butterfly, Anna Bolena, Don Carlo, La Juive, Der Rosenkavalier, Rigoletto, the Verdi Requiem, Goyescas, Aida and Les Contes d'Hoffmann, opera galas and orchestral concerts.

Sesto Quatrini also devotes his attention to the rediscovery of rare or lesser-known works. To date, he has conducted Verdi’s Un giorno di regno, Giulietta e Romeo by Vaccaj (2018, Dynamic DVD), Coscoletto by Offenbach and Ecuba by Manfroce, all at the Festival della Valle d'Itria; Francesca da Rimini by Mercadante (Japan Opera Foundation, Tokyo, 2019) and Donizetti’s Chiara e Serafina (Festival Donizetti Opera 2022, Dynamic DVD).

Along with concerts conducted at the Rossini Opera Festival, the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona, at Teatro alla Scala, Milan, and with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, other highlights among his recent engagements include L’elisir d’amore at the Royal Opera House, London and at the Teatro Regio, Parma; Don Pasquale at the Opernhaus Zürich; Die Zauberflöte at the Teatro Regio, Turin; Norma at La Monnaie, Brussels and at the Teatro Regio, Parma, Teatro Pavarotti-Freni, Modena, and Teatro Municipale, Piacenza; Il turco in Italia at Glyndebourne and at the Teatro Carlo Felice, Genoa; La Traviata at the Royal Danish Opera; Le nozze di Figaro at the ROH Muscat; Anna Bolena at the Teatro Carlo Felice, Genoa; Rigoletto at the Deutsche Oper Berlin; Aida and Les Contes d’Hoffmann at the Lithuanian National Opera; Madama Butterfly at La Fenice, and the two versions of Otello (by Rossini and Verdi) at the Oper Frankfurt.

The 2024/2025 season includes engagements at the Staatsoper Hamburg as guest conductor for Carmen, at ABAO Bilbao Opera for the opening of the season with a new production of Don Pasquale, at Oper Köln for a new production of Nabucco, the Opéra National de Lyon for Madama Butterfly, Teatro San Carlo di Napoli for Roméo et Juliette, and Teatro dell'Opera di Roma for L’Italiana in Algeri.

Other engagements include concerts with the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini in Parma, Piacenza, Trento and Bolzano, and the 2025 New Year concert with the Orchestra Farnesiana at the Teatro Municipale di Piacenza.
