Medium Build a.k.a. Nick Carpenter ist ein zutiefst menschlicher Musiker. Der queere Singer/Songwriter aus Alaska packt in seine Stücke genau das, was er fühlt und denkt und findet dafür auch eine eigene musikalische Sprache.

Im Jahr 2015 gründete er sein Musikprojekt mit einer Gitarre, einem Kassettendeck und seinem Mittel gegen ADHS und verarbeitet seither durch sein Alter Ego sein Leben. Seine Geschichten sind oft einfach und entwaffnend ehrlich. So handelt „In My Room“, ein Vorab-Track seines kommenden Albums „Country“, genau davon: Wie er als pubertierender Jugendlicher sein Zimmer als Safe Space erlebt, inmitten seiner Familie, Vater, Mutter, Bruder. Es ist eine ergreifende kleine Studie, obwohl es eigentlich nur ums Abendessen, PlayStation, einen Freund, die Simpsons und wie nebenbei um das Entdecken des eigenen Körpers geht. „Ich wollte, dass auf diesem Album meine gottverdammte DNA zu hören ist“, sagt der Künstler selbst dazu, „dass es eine menschliche Note hat, dass es etwas ist, das man liebt, zu dem man tanzt, bei dem man weint, mit dem man schläft und in das man sich hineinversetzen kann.“

Entstanden ist die Platte zwischen Anchorage, wo er in den letzten Jahren so etwas wie ein Held seiner Heimatstadt geworden ist, und Nashville, wo er seinen Südstaatenwurzeln nahe ist, und allen Orten dazwischen. „Country“ handelt von der physischen, psychischen und zeitlichen Reise, die Carpenter bis zu diesem Punkt unternommen hat. Es geht um Höhen und Tiefen, und man spürt in jedem der zwölf Songs, wie er mit dem Guten und Schlechten ringt. Die Platte ist akustisch und elektrisch, sensibel und funky und entzieht sich der Kategorisierung. Carpenters Stimme ist von einer bebenden Verletzlichkeit, die von der persönlichen Erkundung von Queerness und sexueller Identität geprägt ist, und schöpft gleichermaßen aus klassischem Country, 80er-Jahre New Wave und Emo. Das Album „Country“ ist eine echte Perle.

His upcoming tour focuses specifically on the middle of the continental United States, not just cities often overlooked by major touring artists, but places in the most vital need of queer community and spiritual uplift. The response of Medium Build’s devoted following has been overwhelming, with over a dozen dates sold-out across the Midwest and Southeast. Carpenter aims to bring that message of uplift and affirmation not just around the county, but around the world. His 2023 tour will continue in Europe, including a special sold-out solo performance at the revered St. Pancras Old Church in London, one of the oldest historical sites of Christian worship in the world. It’s a fitting setting for an artist with such a spiritual core to his music: not necessarily religious, but still searching for something joyful and sublime. That soulful passion defines the music of Medium Build, as conducive to collective ecstasy as private revelation.
