RCA Records and Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release the definitive 50th anniversary edition of Elvis Presley's monumental Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite record-setting global concert telecast/double live album on Friday, August 11.

The 50th anniversary edition of Elvis Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite -- newly remixed and remastered for the occasion -- will be available in a 96kHz, 24bit HiRes-ReMaster.

Recorded live on January 12 and 14, 1973 at the Honolulu International Center Arena (capacity approximately 6000) and beamed into an estimated billion-plus television sets around the world, Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite made a new kind of broadcast history as Elvis and emerging global satellite technology instantaneously connected a major artist with his audience in previously unprecedented numbers. Initially, Elvis' January 14th concert was telecast live via satellite to viewers in Asia and Oceania and presented with a delay in January in Europe. Needing to avoid a programming conflict with Super Bowl VII while also acknowledging that the film "Elvis on Tour" was enjoying an actively successful run in US movie theaters, NBC decided to air their ninety-minute version of Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite (featuring bonus performances recorded for the stateside broadcast) on April 4, 1973. Aloha from Hawaii became NBC's highest-rated program of the year.

Feeling the heat from the Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite global telecast, RCA Records fast-tracked a companion double album soundtrack into production with first pressings hitting US stores on February 4, 1973. The album was Elvis' first #1 in years, peaking at #1 on the Billboard pop and country charts, becoming the fastest-selling chart-topping album of Elvis' career.

The 50th anniversary edition of Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite is produced by Ernst Jørgensen and newly mixed by Grammy® Award-winning recording engineer Matt-Ross Spang. The set includes the original concert, rehearsal show and unique after-show recordings and rehearsals including "Blue Hawaii," "Hawaiian Wedding Song," "No More" and "Early Morning Rain." The deluxe set includes a 28-page booklet featuring in-depth liner notes penned by lifelong Elvis fan/respected music critic Randy Lewis, rare photos and memorabilia from the event, and the first-ever visual release of Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite on Blu-ray.

Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite is the apogee of an astounding career trajectory that began with Elvis' return to live performance in 1968 with an electrifying "comeback" television special that restored him to pop dominance after a seven year hiatus from the concert stage. By 1973, Elvis was a living legend whose status as the world's first atomic-powered singer in the 1950s had evolved into movie stardom before his return to live performance generated a new iconography of Elvis. His watershed global telecast was the first full-length concert by any musician to be beamed around the world over communications satellites newly orbiting the earth in ever increasing numbers. A half century later, the live album and concert film from that performance are perhaps the most revelatory documents of the live shows that Elvis poured so much of his heart and soul into during the 1970s.

The 50th anniversary edition of Elvis Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite presents, for the first time in one authorized package, the entirety of the original January 14, 1973 performance, the previous night's dress rehearsal with a live audience (recorded in case of technical mishaps during the satellite transmission), several bonus tracks inserted into the US broadcast of the event and a Blu-ray transfer of the concert film.

Archival producer Ernst Mikael Jørgensen and Memphis-based recording engineer Matt Ross-Spang have fully remixed the album from the original 16-track live recordings—first captured on tape by esteemed mobile engineer Wally Heider and newly digitized for this release with audiophile 24-bit, 192 KHz transfers--to bring fans a fresh listen to what, for many, is the most treasured performance of Elvis' latter-day years on the road. "To me," Jørgensen said, "that is the biggest thing: [this album] never sounded this good and Elvis never sounded this good."

In the four and a half years between the '68 special and Aloha from Hawaii, Elvis woodshedded his act with a rigorous series of live performances—over 500--in which he re-asserted the role he'd established in the '50s as one of the most electrifying performers of his generation.

Both in Las Vegas and on tour to various parts of the United States, Presley refined and expanded his mastery of musical interpretation of songs long associated with him, while also putting his distinctive stamp on classic and more recent material first popularized by artists as beloved as The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, James Taylor, Hank Williams, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, Jim Reeves and Hawaii's own Kuiokalani "Kui" Lee.

The Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite program was produced and directed by television veteran Marty Pasetta, who'd done specials for Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Glen Campbell and had experience in Hawaii with Don Ho. Pasetta employed split screen techniques and quick cuts to mirror the energy Elvis & Co. put out on stage. The telecast also regularly offered extreme close-ups bringing viewers into contact with Elvis with an intimacy that even those in the audience didn't have.

Ein talentierter und frühreifer Künstler

Elvis Aaron Presley wird am 8. Januar 1935 in Tupelo geboren und zeigt schon als Kind seine Leidenschaft für die Musik. Mit zehn Jahren nimmt er als Cowboy verkleidet an seinem ersten Gesangswettbewerb teil und belegt bei der Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show den fünften Platz. Zu seinem 11. Geburtstag beschliesst seine Familie dann, ihm als Glückwunsch seine erste Gitarre zu schenken. Zwei seiner Onkel nutzen die Gelegenheit, um ihm Gitarrenunterricht zu geben, während seine Mutter ihm hilft, seinen Gesang zu verbessern.

Bereits 1946 lernt Elvis Presley Mississippi Slim kennen, einen lokalen Musiker und Radiomoderator, der ihm hilft, seine Gitarrenakkorde zu perfektionieren. Als er bei Sun Records ankommt, bezahlt er vier selbstverdiente Dollar für seine erste Aufnahme! Mit 18 Jahren singt er dann zwei Coverversionen: My Happiness und That's When Your Heartaches Begin.

Der Beginn einer grossen Karriere

Elvis Presley nimmt anschliessend mehrere Singles mit Scotty Moore und Bill Black auf, die später seine Musiker werden sollten. Am 5. Juli 1954, mitten in den Aufnahmen, beginnt Elvis Presley, seine Lieder mit Körperbewegungen zu begleiten, die Sam Philips überwältigend findet. Nachdem er diese Gestik als eine echte Revolution betrachtet, entscheidet sich der Produzent von Sun Records, das Trio endgültig auf den Weg des Erfolgs lancieren.

Die drei Männer treten unzählige Male auf und begeben sich auf eine lokale Tournee, die bis 1955 dauert, um sich einem grösseren Publikum bekannt zu machen. Der Erfolg war gross. Dabei wird Elvis Presleys Beinarbeit als Skandal betrachtet, doch sie zog das junge Publikum an. Elvis Presleys Sound, eine Mischung aus Blues und Countrymusik wird im gesamten Südwesten der USA gehört und wird bald zu Rockabilly. Daraufhin unterschreibt die Gruppe bei der Plattenfirma RCA, die dafür eigens das Label „Elvis Presley Music“ gründet, um die ersten Studioalben des Phänomens aufzunehmen.

Bis 1958 wird Elvis Presley durch seine Alben Elvis Presley (1956) und Elvis (1956) sowie seine Filmsoundtracks immer beliebter: Loving You (1957) und der unglaubliche King Creole (1958). Nach seinem Auftritt am 9. September 1956 in der Ed Sullivan Show wird er dann zum nationalen Star. An diesem Abend sehen 60 Millionen Amerikaner Elvis' Interpretation von Love Me Tender, dessen Single nach der Sendung über eine Million Mal vorbestellt wird.

Der King: die Entstehung eines Mythos

1956 hat Elvis Presley den Wunsch, sich in anderen Bereichen zu versuchen und unterschreibt einen Vertrag mit Paramount Pictures, um Schauspieler zu werden. Trotz gemischter Kritiken sind die ersten Filme, in denen Elvis mitspielt, aufgrund seiner Bekanntheit echte kommerzielle Erfolge. Daraufhin dreht er noch einige weitere Filme, wie Der Reiter der Dämmerung (1956) oder Schmaus im King Creole (1958), bevor er von 1958 bis 1960 seinen Militärdienst absolvieren muss. Trotz seiner Abwesenheit bringen seine Produzenten die Alben For LP Fans only (1959) und A Date with Elvis (1959) auf den Markt, mit Stücken, die Jahre zuvor aufgenommen wurden.

1960, nach seiner Rückkehr aus der Armee, veröffentlicht er die Alben Something for Everybody (1961) und Pot Luck (1962), um dann einen Schauspielervertrag mit Hollywood zu unterschreiben. Die Produktion hat es eilig, ihm die Hauptrollen der Filme zu geben, für die er den Soundtrack schreiben soll. Daraufhin spielt er in Der Sheriff dieser Damen (1962), Der Mann für alles (1964) oder auch in Kitzel mich (1965).

An der Spitze der Verkaufscharts, trotz Karrierepause!

Obwohl er seine Musikkarriere von 1960 bis 1968 auf Eis legte, gelang Elvis Presley das Kunststück, zehn Original-Filmsoundtracks an die Spitze der Single-Verkaufscharts zu bringen! Darunter befinden sich Girls! Girls! Girls (1962) und Fun in Acapulco (1963).

Das Jahr 1968 gilt auch als Symbol für die Rückkehr des Kings zu seinen Wurzeln. In der Sendung mit dem Titel Elvis wird er vom Publikum gefeiert. Im Jahr darauf veröffentlicht er sein erstes Album seit neun Jahren: From Elvis in Memphis (1969). Dieses Album, das mehr Soul und weniger Rock'n'Roll präsentiert, zeigt die Fähigkeit des Kings, sich an die musikalischen Strömungen der Zeit anzupassen.

Elvis ist fest entschlossen, mit Konzerten auf die Bühne zurückzukehren, und unterschreibt einen Vertrag für 57 Termine über mehrere Jahre hinweg im International Hotel in Las Vegas. Beim ersten dieser Konzerte am 31. Juli 1969 sind die anwesenden Zuschauer von seiner Darbietung fasziniert und spenden ihm drei „Standing Ovations“.

Parallel mit dem Vertrag mit dem Hotel in Las Vegas nimmt Elvis seine Tourneen durch die USA wieder auf und bringt in den Jahren von 1970 bis 1973 sieben Alben heraus, darunter Elvis Country (I'm 10.000 years old) (1971) und Raised on Rock (1973). Im selben Jahr beschliesst er, das allererste Konzert zu geben, das via Satellit in die ganze Welt übertragen wird. Damit erreicht seine Karriere globale Dimensionen. In seinem weissen Anzug mit dem Adler auf dem Rücken wird Elvis für immer The King und veröffentlicht ein Doppelalbum: Aloha From Hawaii via Satellit (1973).

Aufgrund eines zu hohen Medikamentenkonsums stirbt er am 16. August 1977 in Memphis, der Stadt, in der alles begann, an einem Herzinfarkt.

Elvis Presley erhielt im Laufe seiner Karriere eine beeindruckende Anzahl an Auszeichnungen. 2010 wurde die Gesamtzahl seiner verkauften Alben und Singles auf über 600 Millionen geschätzt! Sein Album Elvis' Christmas Album (1957), zum Beispiel, wurde neunmal mit Platin ausgezeichnet. Insgesamt erhält er in seiner etwas mehr als 20-jährigen Karriere 144 Auszeichnungen für seine Singles und Alben.

Elvis ist auch der amerikanische Sänger, der in den Charts der meistverkauften Singles in den USA am häufigsten vertreten ist. So platzierte er 38 Singles in die Top 10, 18 auf Platz 1 und 114 in die Top 40! Ausserdem stand er im Laufe seiner Karriere mehr als 80 Wochen lang an der Spitze der Single-Bestsellerliste.

Zu seinen musikalischen Auszeichnungen zählen drei Grammy Awards für die beste Darbietung zeitgenössischer christlicher Musik in den Jahren 1968, 1973 und 1975 sowie ein Grammy Award im Jahr 1971 für sein Lebenswerk. Heute besitzt er einen Stern auf dem Walk of Fame am Hollywood Boulevard und gehört drei grossen Musikinstitutionen an: der Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame, der Country Music Hall of Fame und der Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

Am Abend von Elvis Presleys Tod fasst US-Präsident Jimmy Carter das Leben des Sängers in einem berühmt gewordenen Satz zusammen: „Elvis ist vielleicht nicht mehr da, aber seine Legende wird für immer bei uns bleiben.»
