Saxophonist und Bandleader Shabaka Hutchings hat sich in letzter Zeit als eine der zentralen Figuren der Europäischen Jazzszene etabliert. Angetrieben von einem rastlosen, kreativen Geist wirbelt er derzeit mit gleich drei Bands - Sons Of Kemet, The Comet Is Coming und Shabaka And The Ancestors - jede Menge Staub auf.

Das im vergangenen Jahr erschienene explosive Sons-Of-Kemet-Album “Your Queen Is A Reptile”, sein Impulse!-Debüt, findet sich in unzähligen Jazz-Bestenlisten 2018 wieder. Jetzt, nur wenige Monate später, legt Hutchings schon mit seiner zweiten Formation nach: Mit dem Bandprojekt The Comet Is Coming sucht er, zusammen mit Schlagzeuger Maxwell Hallett und Keyboarder Dan Leavers, einen eher “anarchistischen Zugang” zur Musik: “Weil wir nicht darüber diskutieren, was die jeweils anderen tun sollen, spielen wir nur das, was wir selbst für richtig halten”, erläutert Shabaka. Das Ergebnis ist ein überzeugendes Beispiel für Teamwork und ein unerhörter Mix aus Jazz, Electronica, Funk und Psychedelic Rock.

In ihrer Bildsprache spielen The Comet Is Coming mit Motiven aus Weltraum, Science Fiction und B-Movies. In einem Feature in The Guardian im April 2016 wurde die Gruppe als "wahrer Erbe" des kosmischen Jazzpioniers Sun Ra bezeichnet und für ihre "Fusion aus Jazz, Afrobeat und Electronica in einem improvisatorischen, intergalaktischen Mash-Up" in den Himmel gelobt.

“In meiner Karriere als Jazzmusiker habe ich mich früher immer wieder gefragt, ob das, was ich tue, auch das ist, was ich tun darf”, sagt Hutchings, der an der renommierten Londoner Guildhall School of Music & Drama klassische Klarinette studiert hat. “Aber inzwischen habe ich einen Punkt erreicht, an dem ich mich nicht mehr fragte, ob das, was ich tue, zulässig oder ein Teil der Jazztradition ist. Ich betrachte mich einfach nur noch als Musiker. Basta.”

The Comet is Coming
is the soundtrack to an imagined apocalypse.

In the aftermath of widespread sonic destruction what sounds remain? Who will lead the survivors to new sound worlds? Who will chart the new frontier? In a warehouse somewhere in London 2013 a meeting would take place between three musical cosmonauts. They would pool their energies to build a vessel powerful enough to transport any party into outer space.

Invoking the cosmic spirits of Sun Ra, futuristic three-piece The Comet Is Coming creates an impetuous blend of jazz, afrobeat and electronica. The group turn their intergalactic jazz into a mythological microcosm, carrying a message of ‘resilience, unity and love’. When The Comet indeed impacts planet earth, take note of the band’s manifesto: “a space is created where all notions of political, social and economic hierarchy will be at once obliterated and transcended.”
