FANTASIA ist die elfte Veröffentlichung von Fretwork bei Signum Classics und erforscht die Hofmusik des Tudor-Englands anhand der Werke von Thomas Lupo. Eine große Anzahl von Lupos privater und intimer Gambenmusik ist erhalten geblieben, und wir können ihre Vielfalt und Qualität bewundern. In seinen dreistimmigen Fantasien schrieb er für einzigartige Kombinationen von Gamben, doch die fünf- und sechsstimmigen Fantasien sind sein beeindruckendstes Werk, seriöse und fesselnde Stücke, die eine fabelhafte Beherrschung des Kontrapunkts zeigen.

Im Jahr 2021 feierte Fretwork sein 35-jähriges Bestehen. In den vergangenen dreieinhalb Jahrzehnten haben sie das Kernrepertoire der großen englischen Consort-Musik von Taverner bis Purcell erforscht und klassische Aufnahmen gemacht, an denen sich andere messen lassen müssen. Im Jahr 2022 planen Fretwork Besuche in Deutschland, Spanien und Frankreich. Außerdem wird es eine Zusammenarbeit mit den Kings Singers und neue Werke von Sir James MacMillan und Roderick Williams geben.

Few other ensembles can match the range of Fretwork’s repertory, spanning as it does the first printed music of 1501 in Venice, to music commissioned by the group this year. Their recordings of arrangements of J. S. Bach have won particular praise, but they have recently issued a disc containing music by Grieg, Debussy, Shostakovitch, Warlock & Britten. This extraordinary breadth of music has taken them all over the world in the 25 years since their debut, and their recordings of the classic English viol repertory – Purcell, Gibbons, Lawes & Byrd – have become the benchmark by which others are judged. Their 2009 recording of the Purcell Fantazias won the Gramophone Award for Baroque Chamber Music.

The consistently high standards they have achieved have brought music old and new to audiences hitherto unfamiliar with the inspiring sound-world of the viol.
