Following the success of their Liszt album on Odradek, Duo Tsuyuki & Rosenboom marks its 10th anniversary as a partnership with 'Variations2', sets of variations for two pianos by Brahms, Saint-Saens and Lutoslawski.

All the composers featured on this release were inspired by the music of others when writing their sets of variations. Brahms paid a very personal tribute to his late friend, Robert Schumann, when he chose Schumann's final work, the 'Ghost Variations', as the basis for his own Variations, Op. 23. We also hear Brahms' magnificent 'St Anthony' Variations inspired by Haydn, which culminate in a passacaglia (a set of variations within the variations): a masterful achievement through which Brahms elevates the form into music of real depth and sophistication.

Saint-Saens' Beethoven Variations, based on Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 18 ('The Hunt'), represent his most substantial work for two pianos, running the gamut of pianistic technique to create an almost orchestral sonority. Reinecke's Bach Variations are more intimate, composed for four hands at one piano, building to an expansive, virtuosic conclusion. Lutoslawski's 'Variations on a Theme by Paganini' are based on Paganini's A minor 'Caprice', No. 24, which also inspired Rachmaninov's famous 'Rhapsody'. Lutoslawski unfolds a series of witty variations: wide leaps, devilish trills and sinewy chromaticism, a lyrical interlude, and a thrilling finale.

Duo Tsuyuki & Rosenboom bilden eines der aufregendsten Klavierduos der Gegenwart. Die Presse lobt die "verschwenderische Klangfarbenpracht", und schwärmt von der "Magie des Spiels“ der beiden Musiker. Als „Phänomenal“ bezeichnete jüngst die Fachzeitschrift Piano News die 2016 erschienene Debut CD des japanisch-deutschen Duos mit Werken von Franz Liszt. Konzerte führen Tsuyuki & Rosenboom durch weite Teile Europas, den USA und Asien. Charakteristisch für das Musizieren der beiden Pianisten ist ihr außergewöhnlicher Interpretationsstil, der durch eine Symbiose von Homogenität im Zusammenspiel und künstlerischer Freiheit gekennzeichnet ist.

Chie Tsuyuki und Michael Rosenboom gründeten ihr Klavierduo 2009 während ihres Studiums an der HMTM in Hannover. Einen entscheidenden Einfluss auf die Gründung und auf die künstlerische Entwicklung des Duos hatte Prof. Bernd Goetzke, den Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli als seinen letzten Schüler bezeichnete, und in dessen Soloklasse das Duo studierte.

Im Jahr 2010, nach dem Gewinn des 1. Preises und des Kawai-Sonderpreises beim „International Piano Duo Competition Tokyo“, begann die internationale Konzerttätigkeit des Duos. Kurz darauf wurden Tsuyuki&Rosenboom zu einem Konzert in St. Martin in the Fields nach London eingeladen und im Rahmen des 100. Jubiläums der Sendereihe „START-Junge Künstler live“ vom NDR erstmals einem breiteren Publikum in Deutschland vorgestellt. Es folgten zahlreiche Konzerte an einem wie auch an zwei Klavieren in Europa und den USA, die für Furore sorgten, wie zum Beispiel ihr Gastspiel beim "Chicago Duo Piano Festival" oder die Aufführungen des "Karnevals der Tiere" mit Schauspieler Christian Quadflieg und dem Göttinger Sinfonieorchester. Seit Beginn ihrer Karriere widmen sich die beiden Musiker, neben dem Original-Repertoire, mit wachsendem Enthusiasmus auch dem Transkribieren von Werken aus unterschiedlichen Epochen und Gattungen für ihre Besetzung.

Durch diese Form des kreativen Schaffens bringen sie ihre Begeisterung für die gesamte Musikliteratur zum Ausdruck und lassen gänzlich neue Perspektiven auf die von ihnen verehrten Meisterwerke entdecken. Inzwischen ist die Zahl der von ihnen bearbeiteten Werke auf mehrere abendfüllende Programme gewachsen. 2014 sorgten ihre Transkriptionen in Deutschland erstmals für große Begeisterung beim Publikum und der Fachwelt. Die Kritik berichtete von einer „Faszination, der sich keiner entziehen konnte“. 2016 strahlte der Kultursender Allegro HD mehrfach eine Zusammenstellung der künstlerischen Arbeit des Duos im Abendprogramm des lateinamerikanischen Fernsehens aus, und ermöglichte einem großen Publikum einen tiefen Einblick in das künstlerische Schaffen des Duos.

Tsuyuki&Rosenboom wurden bei internationalen Wettbewerben und Festivals mit zahlreichen Preisen ausgezeichnet, 1. Preis und „Kawai Award“ beim „International Piano Duo Competition Tokyo“, 1. Preis beim „International Music Competition Pietro Argento“ in Italien, 1. Preis und Grieg Sonderpreis beim „Grieg à deux“ in Oslo, sie sind Preisträger des International Music Competition London, International Piano Duo Competition „Liszt 200“ in Chicago.

Dem Pianisten-Duo ist es ein besonderes Anliegen, nicht nur das umfangreiche Standardrepertoire der Gattung zu pflegen. Tsuyuki&Rosenboom sind bekannt für unkonventionelle Programm-Zusammenstellungen, auf ihren Konzertprogrammen finden sich ebenso weitgehend unbekannte Schätze sowie Uraufführungen von Komponisten der Gegenwart. Zurzeit arbeitet das Duo an seiner zweiten CD, die voraussichtlich Anfang 2019 auf den Markt kommen wird.
