Info zu Man to You
Rob de Boer celebrates tenderness in his soulful blues-fusion track “Man to You”.
Slow-burning and sultry, his soulful side shines through in his poetic lyricism, the ethereal backing vocals, and moving guitar lines. The organic sound is filled out by saxophone and stripped-back drums, bridging together modern influences with old school sounds and making for an addictively tender song drenched in nostalgia.
“Man to You” is a song about self-acceptance, exploring de Boer’s queerness against the backdrop of conservative religious traditions and the social definitions of manhood. It’s the final single coming ahead of his debut album, and it leaves a lasting impression.
“I named the album after ‘Man to You’ as I feel it best captures the narrative on the record,” de Boer says. “The song came during a time of exploring my identity and sexuality. I felt a growing sense of uncertainty around who I was and how I should present myself to others. As an album title, it goes beyond masculinity or sexuality and addresses broader questions of what it means to be a man or an adult. The record reflects on formative years of learning, growth, and change.”
Inspired by pioneers like Bill Withers, and modern virtuosos like Puma Blue and Oscar Jerome, de Boer is multi-disciplinary at heart and appreciates the crossing of the audio and visual. The release of “Man to You” is accompanied by a music video with messages of its own. Directed by Émilie Richard Froozan, it’s set in an underground cabaret where Rob sings to a cast of lonely older men, all with varying reactions to his serenade. Check out the single and music video below, and stay tuned for the release of the full album on May 16th.
Rob de Boer
Rob de Boer
is an Irish-Dutch singer, multi-instrumentalist, producer and visual artist currently based between London and Dublin.
His music inspired by the work of songwriting legends including Bill Withers, and vital present-day voices in the alternative soul-jazz crossover space, including Oscar Jerome, Puma Blue and Michael Kiwanuka,
Rob has made a name for himself through his distinctive audio-visual approach, smooth vocal tones and evocative lyricism. As a multi-disciplinary creative, his work in film and photography has taken him across the world. His music draws upon Latin and Afro-rhythmic sensibilities, as well as the comfort of Motown blues, funk and soul.
He explores identity, notions of manhood and relationships across his terracotta-hued, soul-leaning debut album ‘Man to You’ which releases on 16th May via Bridge the Gap. The record comes after a string of well received singles, which have drawn widespread support from the likes of Wonderland, Line of Best Fit, RTÉ, NTS, and Jazz FM. The recent single Our Own Way was accompanied by a stunning, Bob Fosse-inspired jazz-dance video co-directed by Rob and Douglas Reddan and is exemplary of Rob’s multi-disciplinary approach as he uses his skills as a film maker to expand his musical universe.
“An old school and unassuming jazzy gem, Dublin artist Rob de Boer shows himself to be a soft spoken crooner and wonderful lyricist.” - Wonderland Magazine
"Rob de Boer’s voice is smooth as butter" - The Line of Best Fit
He’s performed at some of Ireland’s biggest festivals, including Forbidden Fruit, All Together Now, Another Love Story and Electric Picnic, and also performs and produces for fellow Dublin-based acts Papa Romeo and FRANK ZING.
