In 1965 in the face of social unrest, legendary Memphis label Stax Records put on two pulsating shows at the 5-4 Ballroom in Los Angeles, featuring Rufus Thomas, Booker T. and the M.G.’s, William Bell, Carla Thomas, Wilson Picket and more.

60 years later the recordings, newly mastered by Joe Tarantino have been collected with a bonus set of performances recorded at Club Paradise, Memphis to form Stax Revue – Live In ’65!. This expanded edition collects two nights in Los Angeles with a bonus live, never-released set of performances, which reissue producer Alec Palao stumbled upon.

In the summer of 1965 Stax Records’ brightest stars—including Rufus & Carla Thomas, Booker T. & The M.G.’s, The Mar-Keys, The Mad Lads, Wilson Pickett, and William Bell—took the stage for a two-night residency at South LA’s 5-4 Ballroom. Billed as the Stax Revue, the August 1965 shows marked many of the artists’ first Los Angeles performances and came just days before the Watts Rebellion, underscoring the deep cultural and political tensions of the time.

Live in ’65! includes recordings from that electrifying engagement, plus a rare hometown showcase captured earlier that summer at Memphis’ Club Paradise, featuring David Porter, The Astors, Booker T. & The M.G.’s, and Wendy Rene. The deluxe collection features previously unreleased highlights from both shows, including Porter’s charismatic set, a searing rendition of “In the Midnight Hour” by Pickett, a fiery jam of “The Dog” from Rufus Thomas, and Booker T. & The M.G.’s high-energy “Boot-Leg,”.
