Info zu Song Of Joy (Remastered)

Song of Joy is the second studio album by Captain & Tennille, released in 1976. Three out of the four singles released from the album were top-ten singles: "Muskrat Love", "Lonely Night (Angel Face)" and "Shop Around". The title track was co-written and originally performed by their A&M Records label mate Billy Preston.

"Captain & Tennille dominated in 1976, when their brilliant follow-up to the Love Will Keep Us Together album garnered another three Top Five hits (bringing their streak to five!), the trio of 45s all hitting number one in the adult contemporary charts as the two singles before did. Though it is hard to beat Neil Sedaka's original from his The Hungry Years album, "Lonely Night (Angel Face)" was a smart move for the duo. They hit in February with this other tune from the pen of the guy who wrote their debut hit, and followed that up quickly in May with a unique and clever cover of the Smokey Robinson classic from 16 years before, "Shop Around." Smokey's debut hit number two while Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille got to number four -- lightning striking pretty much twice for "Shop Around." "Muskrat Love" in October was unique in another way as the group America failed to break through with the W.A. Ramsey cover. Had A&M Records gotten their version of "Wedding Song (There Is Love)" out in a timely fashion they may have hit with that as well -- the title is listed as "public domain" here, though on Captain & Tennille's Greatest Hits they do credit Paul Stookey. Tennille's rendition with soaring backing vocals is even more majestic than the Stookey classic. Song of Joy is a fantastic extension of the formula from the pair's debut LP. And though it is hard to argue with their huge success, it's easy to wish they expanded the band from the nucleus of drummer Hal Blaine, Dragon on bass and synths, and Tennille's voices to more players. Like, where is the guitar? Jim Horn is simply awesome on "1954 Boogie Blues" as are those on the other brass instruments, but a Jack Bruce providing bass would've helped the tune explode. The Captain handles most of the bass and the bottom sometimes turns invisible. For all intents and purposes they were a trio, or duo plus drummer, and though there are the mentioned horns as well as some backing vocalists, most notably the bass vocal of Gary Sims on "Lonely Night" and "Shop Around" and Louisa Tennille and Melissa Tennille, just imagine the depth of sound had the Beach Boys worked with them on instruments and backing vocals for a few songs -- or Sedaka and the Section or 10cc, the two bands Neil utilized on his Laughter in the Rain epic. Just imagine! Like Todd Rundgren, Emitt Rhodes, and Paul McCartney's first solo disc, playing most or all of the instruments is interesting but not as colorful as impressions from other musical personalities. 1979's Make Your Move LP did have extra help, and when Captain & Tennille brought in a full crew as on 1980's Keeping Our Love Warm, it made for one of their most impressive musical outings, though it is important to keep in mind it was their one album up to this point in time that had no Top 40 hits! That observation aside, Dragon and Tennille play their hearts out, and when it comes to following up a monster debut, their second effort was quite simply an admirable and very impressive success."

Toni Tennille
Keyboardist / arranger / producer Daryl "The Captain" Dragon and singer / pianist Toni Tennille became one of the most successful pop music duos of all-time as Captain & Tennille. The husband and wife team kicked off their recording career in style when their debut single Love Will Keep Us Together went straight to # 1 and won the 1975 Grammy Award for Record of the Year. The hits kept flowing with more top 40 singles, including The Way I Want to Touch You, Shop Around, Lonely Night (Angel Face,) Muskrat Love, Can’t Stop Dancin’, You Never Done It Like That and another chart-topper in 1980 with Toni Tennille’s Do That To Me One More Time.

The couple met in 1971, when Dragon was the keyboard player for a musical revue composed by Tennille. Daryl is the son of conductor Carmen Dragon and his mother was a singer. In 1967, he was playing and touring with the Beach Boys - where he was dubbed "Captain Keyboard" by lead singer Mike Love for always wearing a captain’s hat on-stage. Additionally, he appeared on a few Beach Boys albums of the period.

Toni Tennille, born Cathryn Antoinette Tennille – is the daughter of Frank Tennille, a big-band singer and Cathryn Tennille, who became a local television talk-show host. In 1965 Toni moved to California and became involved in theater, which led to her toward writing music for the ecologically minded revue, Mother Earth. The show was performed in San Francisco and Los Angeles, where Dragon joined the band. After it closed, Dragon returned to the Beach Boys and arranged to have Tennille hired as a pianist and backup singer. "Captain Keyboard" and the "Beach Girl" toured with the Beach Boys for a year, while becoming romantically involved. The couple was married shortly thereafter and began performing in Los Angeles clubs as a duo called Captain & Tennille.

In September 1973, they financed their own recording, Tennille’s composition of The Way I Want to Touch You and released it on their own Butterscotch Castle label. The song earned significant airplay in Los Angeles and the duo was signed by A&M Records. For their major-label debut they covered the Neil Sedaka/Howard Greenfield tune Love Will Keep Us Together. The song quickly went to number 1 on the Billboard charts, and the rest is pretty much pop-music history.

Amidst a continual flurry of hit songs, 1976 also brought the Captain & Tennille’s weekly television show, which only lasted one season. In 1979, Captain & Tennille left A&M for Casablanca records, a move that placed them atop the Billboard Hot 100 once again, this time with Toni’s song Do That To Me One More Time.

Toni Tennille continues on with a solo career as a singer of traditional pop, performing with big bands and symphonies and has released numerous solo recordings to the praise of critics. She’s also become involved in stage musicals, having starred in the touring company of Victor/Victoria. Daryl Dragon continues to produce Toni’s and Captain & Tennille records and he also ran Rumbo Recorders, the recording studio they built in Los Angeles in 1979 – and sold in 2003. These days there’s no place like home for the couple, as they much prefer their own surroundings to life on the road. Now, 30 years after their chart debut they’ve recorded two new holiday songs, "Saving Up Christmas" and "Tahoe Snow."
