With 16 tracks and 5 guest appearances, one has to wonder how long it’s been since the former member of 5 Majeur last took a break. A common thread runs through the project from start to finish: introspection. Record chronicles Kéroué’s journey, marked by difficulties, doubts, hard work and determination. Whilst the rapper’s writing and style are well established, the instrumentals add depth to the message. The prevalence of soul samples and cinematic melodies soften the percussion, as on “Monopole” and “Wu-Tang”. All in all, Record is a rap album with multiple influences, punctuated by polished productions and personal lyrics.

If one were to sum up Record in a single word, ‘introspection’ would be on everyone’s lips. Through these tracks, Kéroué explores the different facets of his career, whilst maintaining a realistic perspective on his emotions. The lyrics act as a form of catharsis, even going so far as to speak of love in “Coeur brisé sur la 808”. A dreamy instrumental, perfect for these three minutes of confessions, where the Breton artist reflects on the reasons behind his break-up. This single opens up another dimension: that of music as an outlet. Indeed, the 808 likely refers to the TR-808, a drum machine regularly used in hip-hop. Kéroué is undoubtedly seeking to show that creativity helps him open up. These confessions continue on “Aujourd’hui Interlude”. Over a more understated beat, the rapper is more candid about the causes of this break-up, reaching a conclusion: “today I’m all alone, today I know why”.
