Info zu Schubert: Sonatas (Arr. for Violin & Guitar)

As Jacob Kellermann points out in the liner notes to this disc, there is an unbroken tradition of performing arrangements of Franz Schubert’s music on the guitar. Already in his lifetime some of his most popular songs appeared with simplified guitar accompaniment, marketed by music publishers wanting to exploit the growing market for domestic music-making. Schubert himself composed very little for the instrument, and there are doubts regarding Schubert’s own skills on the instrument. Nevertheless it is well known that the guitar was in fashion with the middle-class Viennese among which Schubert and his circle of friends moved. In his notes, Kellermann argues that elements of the light, melody-driven and carefree musical style favoured in that environment and present in stylized form in much of Schubert’s music is the very aspect that makes it so inviting to play on the guitar. DuoKeMi was formed by Kellermann and Daniel Migdal in 2006, and the two are constantly aiming to expand the repertoire for their combination of instruments. This has resulted in a number of commissions as well as new transcriptions, often by Kellermann himself as in the case of the much-loved Arpeggione Sonata recorded here.

Duo KeMi:
Daniel Migdal, violin
Jacob Kellermann, guitar

Duo KeMi (Daniel Migdal and Jacob Kellermann)
was formed in 2006 and has established itself as one of Sweden’s most sought-after ensembles. In 2010 the duo won first prize in the prestigious Aschaffenburg Internationaler Wettbewerb für Kammermusik mit Gitarre, which proved to be a springboard for an international career. Nowadays Daniel Migdal and Jacob Kellermann appear regularly in concert and at festivals in countries such as Germany, the Czech Republic, France and the Netherlands. They have also made a number of successful tours to South Korea and China. Duo KeMi has performed all over Sweden in concert halls, at festivals and for chamber music societies, constantly working to expand the repertoire for this combination of instruments – which has resulted in a large number of new transcriptions and commissions.

Daniel Migdal is a sought-after soloist, chamber musician and orchestra leader. As a soloist he has appeared with orchestras including the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra, Gävle Symphony Orchestra and Västerås Sinfonietta. He often plays at Sweden’s foremost concert venues and at festivals such as the Båstad Chamber Music Festival, Gotland Chamber Music Festival, Hardanger Musikkfest (Norway) and Busan Chamber Music Festival (South Korea). He has broadcast on Swedish radio and television and is regularly invited to appear as assistant leader with the Gothenburg Symphony and Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestras. He is the founder and artistic director of ‘Förstaparkett’, a chamber music series in Sweden presenting classical music to a young and inexperienced audience. Together with his sister he runs the string collective Migdal Strings, working with jazz, pop and film music.

Jacob Kellermann has established himself as one of the most active Swedish guitarists of his generation. He performs regularly all over Sweden and has appeared internationally as a soloist and chamber musician, playing at a number of guitar and chamber music festivals. He has been a soloist with orchestras including the Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra and Camerata S (South Korea), New European Ensemble (the Netherlands) and Norrbotten NEO (Sweden), and his concerts have been broadcast on radio and television in Sweden, German and South Korea. With an extensive repertoire that often features his own transcriptions, he is constantly searching for new expressive possibilities for the guitar. Close collaboration with numerous composers has resulted in many works written especially for him. Jacob Kellermann is also a member and co-founder of the Dutch-based New European Ensemble.
