Info zu Stravinsky, Ravel & Gershwin: Transcriptions & Original Piano Works

Stravinsky’s groundbreaking Rite of Spring is heard on this recording in the formidable yet seldom performed solo piano transcription by the 20th-century American composer and pianist Sam Raphling. It is coupled with Ravel’s own virtuosic transcription of La Valse, Gershwin’s jazz-infused 3 Preludes and his own solo piano version of Rhapsody in Blue.

„[La Valse]…could well have been written for the piano, and even when you have heard the orchestral version countless times, this still seems a viable alternative. The one original work comes with Gershwin’s jazz inspired Three Preludes, here performed as if they are being improvised. That the solo piano version of Rhapsody in Blue can stand alone probably tells us a great deal about the orchestral part in the original score. The French pianist, Eric Ferrand-N’Kaoua, is the highly capable exponent of the entire programme…“ (David Denton, David's Review Corner)
