Info zu Rachmaninov: Vespers & Complete All-Night Vigil (Remaster 2015)

Rachmaninov's Vespers, the pinnacle of Orthodox Church music, in a sumptuous performance by Paul Hillier and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir. The First World War was at its height when the work was composed; Rachmaninov was on tour in Russia with Serge Koussevitsky, raising funds for the war effort against Germany and the creation of the Vespers was an emotional experience for him. It uses authentic Russian and Greek chants in several movements, is unmistakably liturgical and is designed for a three-hour service. It is also notorious for the demands it makes of the singers, most notably the very deep bass writing.

The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir was founded in 1981 by Tõnu Kaljuste. He remained its principal conductor and artistic director until 2001, when he invited conductor Paul Hillier to take over the post. The Choir has an extensive repertoire ranging from Gregorian chant to twentieth-century music, with special emphasis on Estonian composers, including Arvo Pärt and Veljo Tormis. It tours regularly and has made numerous recordings, many of which have received the highest praise, including 4 Grammy nominations. The Choir works with world-class conductors and orchestras and has a long-standing partnership with the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra.

'a very serious competitor indeed.' (Gramophone)
