Info zu Down In Flames
The debut album, Down in Flames, by Glasgow Kiss is a burst of sweet dichotomy, altered reflections, foils, doppelgangers, and visions of the self through enchanting and fractured perspectives. First off, the lyrics are devastating portraits of loneliness, toxicity, grief and loss, desire and darkness. The contrast; however, is the rhythm guitar sound: a bold power-rock groove that launches us into the stratosphere, almost as if the band first tempts us to make love with our own misery, just to shake it off and rock ‘til we drop. In conjunction with the band’s overall theme of aesthetic duality, lead vocalist Charlotte Marlen Midtun puts on a clinic of tonal dynamics and emotional depth. From captivating soaring high range to powerful gritty belting to delicate passages in the mid-range, her remarkable range makes for a compelling emotional performance.
Moreover, and more specifically, one cannot listen to this record without appreciating the mix on the vocals. Charlotte is produced sonically to be right in our ear, deep in our minds straight down through the heart, and when harmonies are added, they are produced as elegant backdrop, a whisper, like lace. This technique would, at first, seem like the natural “go-to” for most projects, but the effect is quite new compared with the latest trend in the industry to bring the harmony tracks equal in volume and tonality, creating what some might refer to as a “choral wash.” Glasgow Kiss; however, do not “wash” or dilute a darned thing. They write our stories, raw and unedited.
All things considered, Glasgow Kiss offer us Down in Flames so we can relate to their sorrow and share in their joy. They prove to us that the two opposite viewpoints can live simultaneously, that both can be true, that both make a beautiful, delicate balance. We can confide in Glasgow Kiss. We come to them with our demons, and they give us a safe space. We include them in our victories and they high-five us when we all reach the top of the mountain.
The album was produced by Glasgow Kiss, and mixed/mastered by Peter Michelsen (Rat City, Madelene, Byting) at The Norwegian Sound studio. Glasgow Kiss
are a female fronted alternative metal band with a power-rock vibe that will rattle the windows and shake the foundations. They formed in 2020 in Bergen, Norway, and they are fronted by vocalist extraordinaire Charlotte Marlen Midtun. On guitar, we have Daniel Anker-Goli, Sveinung Sveen, and John Erik Soltvedt plays the bass. Frode Andreassen is on drums, and trust us, the band isn’t shy. They come right at us with that heavy rhythm guitar groove and a vocal attack rich and addictive. Some might say that Glasgow Kiss sound like Halestorm, Within Temptation, or Nightwish, but in literal terms, they create a unique sonic space, all swag, sass, and attitude, balanced at times with relatable themes of darkness and shadow.
Comprehensively, Glasgow Kiss seem to embody and somehow harness the power of the day and the mystery of midnight, the magic initiated by the band’s diverse backgrounds, Frode influenced by thrash and pop metal, Sveinung with a background in black metal, John, playing for years in a hard rock band, and Daniel coming in as the “riff-master.” Charlotte is influenced by classic pop and more current hard rock, and if there was ever an example of lightning in a bottle, this would be it: outstanding instrumentation with emotive vocals that rip through your soul.
In terms of benchmarks, accomplishments, and accolades, in 2022 the band released the EP “Fury,” accompanied by a series of video singles that garnered international radio play. Moreover, they received glowing reviews from publications such as Norway Rock Magazine, Eternal Terror, and Heavymetal.no. Moreover, their new album, titled Down in Flames, is a masterpiece, tracks recorded in multiple locations with love, intensity, passion, and spontaneity. When listening to this record, it is easy to forget that you’re listening to a record, since each song is like a postcard with a picture from your life. It’s all there, the wins and crushing losses, the celebrations, the sorrow. Glasgow Kiss, with their power-rock guitar sound and heartbreaking vocals paint us a portrait of our very best selves, even our darkness, fashioned in a spectrum of dazzling light.
In all, it is difficult to put Glasgow Kiss in a “category.” While some of their verse-work sounds like super-juiced classic rock and some of their choruses have chord progressions and note-templates more akin to female fronted symphonic metal, the purpose of the band is quite clear. Rock. Now. As hard as is humanly possible.
