Info zu Planet Drum

A longtime audiophile favorite, Grateful Dead percussionist Mickey Hart's innovative Planet Drum has never sounded better. Remastered in 96 kHz from the original master tapes is now available for the first time ever at HIGHRESAUDIO, this groundbreaking world music album brings the body, tonality, physicality, and spaciousness of Hart and company's percussive mastery into your room in full, three-dimensional detail. This is one of the most special analog releases you could ever hope to hear.

For Planet Drum, Hart convened some of the world's finest drum talents for a momentous collaboration that won the very first Grammy for World Music. He brought together Nigerian drum legend Babatunde Olatunji, Indian tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, Nigerian talking drum ace Sikiru Adepoju, and Puerto Rico's master conguero Giovanni Hidalgo, among others. The cornerstone 1991 album spent an unprecedented 26 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard world music chart and continues to sell as a perennial favorite to this very day.

Much of this music is hypnotic given its use of tribal rhythms and repeating motifs. For example, "The Hunt" uses a variety of hand drums to create mesmerizing rhythmical textures. "Evening Samba" embraces the music of the Brazilian samba schools; led by Airto Moreira, this track uses two-toned agogo bells, the surdo (bass drum), and the tamborim (Brazilian tambourine). Crossing the Atlantic, we hear a stunning performance by the Nigerian percussionist and singer Babatunde Olatunde on "Iyanu Surprises." On this recording, Olatunde accompanies his singing with deft hand drumming. The album closes with a gentle composition called "Mysterious Island." On this selection, one can almost feel the drip of the rainforest as drums rumble underneath a blowing breeze and the distant sounds of birdsong.
